Florence Pugh has played many strong and intense roles in her career. She has made a mark for herself in films like Midsommar, Little Women, and Fighting with My Family. Pugh will, however, face her most intense yet softest role in the upcoming A24 drama We Live In Time, which also features Andrew Garfield.

Playing a woman with cancer, Almut, who goes through her relationship with Garfield’s Tobias, Pugh reportedly insisted on shaving her hair for the role. While director John Crowley reportedly suggested the option of wearing wigs, Pugh reportedly rejected them and said that she might as well go all the way with a story like this.

‘Heartbreaking’ is the one word that is sure to be common in everyone’s minds when they watch the trailer for A24’s We Live In Time. The romantic drama stars Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield as a couple who meet through an accident (Pugh’s Almut hits Garfield’s Tobias with a car) and their journey as they deal with various milestones in their lives.

The trailer for the film sees Pugh’s Almut get diagnosed with cancer and the couple having to navigate her treatment while raising their child. The film reportedly jumps from different points in time of the couple’s life and navigates the heartwarming yet sad tale of this doomed romance.

As seen in the trailer, Pugh appears with a shaved head for a portion of the film and she reportedly did it for real. Talking about the conversation she had about it with the director John Crowley, Pugh told Vanity Fair that she was given the option to wear a wig for the role but she denied it. She said,

I just stopped him mid-sentence and I was like, ‘John, no one can play a character like this in a movie like this and not do the thing that is needed to be done’. And if you don’t want to do it, I believe that you shouldn’t be doing a story like this.

Pugh mentioned that when she appeared in public with the look, there were many speculations, and someone even reportedly said that she shaved her head to “reclaim her identity”.

Andrew Garfield And Florence Pugh Had Never Shared The Screen Together Before

To play a couple with so much chemistry and closeness, filmmakers usually go for actors who already know each other or have worked with each other. There have been many instances like Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, and Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams where the leads did not know each other, but it is always easier if they do.

However, director John Crowley sort of took a risk with We Live In Time when he cast Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, two of the most popular actors at the moment, but who had never worked with each other. Barring one instance where they presented an Academy Award together, the two had never worked with each other.

However, they reportedly gelled immediately and had great chemistry. Pugh said to Vanity Fair,

I felt very grown-up. I felt like I was coming at it in a different way, and I had someone who could hold me and protect me in the same way that I was holding Andrew and protecting him. And it was a very, very fluid language between the two of us, and that was just a very powerful thing to create with someone.

Garfield also mentioned that the two were initially unsure whether they would be able to perform such an intense role without knowing each other that well. But once they started rehearsing, it all came together.

We Live In Time will be released on limited screens on October 11.
