One of the most interesting aspects of Hunter x Hunter is how its Nen system divides abilities into six categories, each with its own strengths and applications. Naruto follows a completely different power system, but several of its Hokage have fighting styles that bear an interesting resemblance to these Nen types.
From Tsunade’s monstrous physical strength to Hashirama’s ability to control the battlefield, there are some surprisingly fitting comparisons. While these classifications aren’t canon, looking at how each Hokage approaches combat makes it easier to imagine which Nen category would suit them best.
6 Conjuration: Hiruzen Sarutobi’s Versatile Combat Arsenal
Hiruzen Sarutobi | Credits: Studio PierrotHiruzen Sarutobi earned the nickname Professor for good reason. The Third Hokage was exceptionally knowledgeable about ninjutsu and could use a remarkable variety of techniques in battle. His summoning contract with Enma, who can transform into the Adamantine Staff, makes Conjuration an interesting comparison.
In HxH, Conjurers use their aura to materialize objects, sometimes giving them unusual properties. Hiruzen doesn’t actually create his staff through a similar ability, but his reliance on a versatile weapon and extensive arsenal makes the category a reasonable fit. It takes sixth place because his greatest strength is his versatility rather than one signature ability.
5 Transmutation: Kakashi Hatake’s Lightning-Focused Fighting Style
Kakashi Hatake | Credits: Studio PierrotKakashi Hatake is famous for copying thousands of techniques, but his mastery of Lightning Release deserves just as much attention. His Chidori and Lightning Blade concentrate lightning chakra into attacks capable of piercing powerful opponents.
This makes Transmutation an interesting match, as Nen users belonging to this category can change their aura’s properties to imitate different substances or elements. Killua’s electricity-based abilities are a particularly good example. Although Kakashi’s techniques rely on chakra nature transformation rather than Nen, the resemblance is easy to appreciate. Transmutation ranks fifth because his lightning-based combat style fits the category, even though his versatility extends far beyond it.
4 Emission: Tobirama Senju and Minato Namikaze’s Precision
Tobirama Senju and Minato Namikaze are two Hokage who could turn a seemingly ordinary battlefield into a nightmare for their opponents. Both mastered the Flying Thunder God Technique, allowing them to teleport between marked locations and launch attacks before enemies could react.
In Hunter x Hunter, Emission allows users to separate their aura from their bodies while maintaining its strength. The category also has applications involving teleportation, although the Flying Thunder God Technique operates through space-time ninjutsu. Emission earns fourth place because its emphasis on distance and precision makes it a compelling comparison for these two Hokage.
3 Manipulation: Hashirama Senju’s Extraordinary Wood Release
Hashirama Senju | Credits: Studio PierrotHashirama Senju could turn an entire battlefield against his opponents with Wood Release. His ability to create enormous wooden structures, restrain powerful enemies, and even suppress tailed beasts makes Manipulation an appealing match.
In Hunter x Hunter, Manipulators use Nen to control objects or living beings, making their abilities particularly effective for controlling their surroundings. Shikamaru Nara, Konoha’s Eighth Hokage, also fits this category through his Shadow Possession techniques, which allow him to restrict and control opponents’ movements. Manipulation takes third place because both Hokage demonstrate how controlling an opponent can be just as effective as overpowering them.
2 Enhancement: Tsunade’s Devastating Physical Strength
Tsunade | Credit: Studio PierrotIf there’s one Hokage who immediately comes to mind when discussing Enhancement, it’s Tsunade. Her incredible physical strength comes from concentrating chakra into her fists, allowing her to deliver punches capable of devastating the surrounding battlefield. HxH‘s Enhancement category revolves around strengthening the user’s natural physical abilities, making this comparison particularly convincing.
Tsunade’s Creation Rebirth also showcases her extraordinary medical ninjutsu, although it isn’t technically an Enhancement ability. Her fighting style is still built around overwhelming strength and resilience. Enhancement takes second place because Tsunade embodies the category’s straightforward approach to physical combat better than almost anyone else.
1 Specialization: Naruto Uzumaki’s Unmatched Uniqueness
Naruto Uzumaki | Credits: Studio PierrotNaruto Uzumaki has accumulated an extraordinary combination of powers throughout his journey, making Specialization an interesting choice for the Seventh Hokage. In Hunter x Hunter, Specialists possess Nen abilities that don’t fit neatly into the other five categories. Naruto’s connection with Kurama, Six Paths Sage Mode, and access to multiple chakra natures give him an exceptionally diverse fighting style.
These abilities aren’t literally examples of Nen Specialization, but the category provides an interesting way to represent his unconventional arsenal. Specialization takes the top spot because Naruto’s combination of powers makes him the most difficult Hokage to associate with just one conventional fighting style.
