Clay plays an important role as an early-game resource in Graveyard Keeper. It helps craft important items like repair kits and ceramic goods, which are necessary for progressing your graveyard and improving efficiency.
The good news is that finding and unlocking clay is fairly easy and early in the game. Once you know where to look and what to do, gathering it becomes quick and reliable. Let’s dive in.

Before you start collecting clay, you need to first progress in the main story. The story thread where you’ll meet the Bishop to deliver your first sermon (in the church).
He is the one who will introduce you to various new technologies in Graveyard Keeper. At this point, you will need to (will be able to) unlock the “Concept of Dirt” technology. This is the key requirement that enables clay gathering.
Once unlocked, you’ll be able to identify clay pits, which appear as cracked patches of earth. To collect clay, simply equip a shovel and start digging these spots. Before you start wondering and looking for the cracked patches, here are a few reliable locations:
- Just south of your graveyard (Near the church), near the river (two clay pits are located here)
- Near the potter’s house in the southern part of the village (two more pits)
The only thing to think about during digging is the energy it consumes. Each time you dig a clay pit, you’ll consume a small amount of energy and receive clay. These spots are easy to access, making clay one of the most convenient materials to farm early on.
Clay Uses and Crafting Recipes
Dig first, craft later. | Credits: Lazy Bear GamesAs with many other games, Clay in Graveyard Keeper is also primarily used as a crafting material. Here, it is especially important as it helps produce ceramics and repair kits. And these repair kits are what keep the efficiency of your graveyard high.
If you want to study clay at your study table, it is possible and will also provide 10 green tech points as a reward. The research material for this study is also simple: Faith, Science, and a small amount of Energy.
One thing to note before we discuss crafting recipes, since clay is one of the basic materials, it can’t decompose into simpler resources. Here are some of the crafting recipes that require clay (at the Stone Cutter and Potters Wheel):
| Ceramic bowls (x3) | – 1× Clay – 1× Water | 10 Energy |
| Stone Repair Kit (x4) | – 1× Piece of Stone – 2× Simple Iron Parts – 1× Clay | 10 Energy |
| Marble Repair Kit (x4) | – 1× Polished Marble Brick – 2× Complex Iron Parts – 1× Clay | 10 Energy |
NOTE: Stone Cutter II only reduces the energy required to craft the materials (but only for some items, not all).
Overall, it is clear that clay is a versatile and necessary resource that supports both crafting and technological progression, making it a must-have material in the early stages of Graveyard Keeper.
