The Lawrenceville, New Jersey, contestant, who works as a bureaucrat and studies law, is now breathing down the neck of some very famous names on the all-time leaderboard. 

Ding is already fifth in consecutive wins, and he is inching closer to James Holzhauer’s 32-game mark while still staring up at Amy Schneider’s regular-season money total of $1,382,800. Add in his metro Detroit roots, his Grosse Pointe North background, and his father’s ties to Wayne State, and it is no surprise his run has people in both New Jersey and Michigan cheering like proud neighbors.

Ding’s 30th win was not a lazy stroll to the finish line. It was tight, and that made it better television. Going into Final Jeopardy, Ding had $30,800, while Patrick Nolan sat right behind him at $28,000. Leighanna Mixter was still alive in the game too, but at $5,400, she needed help from the wagering gods. The category was The 1950s, and the clue asked for the safe-and-effective announcement made on April 12, 1955, the 10th anniversary of the death of a famous American. Ding came through with the correct response, “What is the polio vaccine?”, and that was enough to seal the deal.

Ding wagered $25,201, which took him to $56,001 for the game and $849,603 overall. Patrick Nolan missed with “What is penicillin,” dropping to $18,000 after a $10,000 wager. Leighanna Mixter also got Final Jeopardy right, but her smaller wager of $5,000 left her in third with $10,400. That is the funny thing about Jeopardy! Sometimes knowing the answer is only half the battle, and the other half is having the nerve to bet like you mean it. Ding did both.

Ding returned on Friday, April 24, for his next game, with the official contestant tracker listing him as a 30-game champion heading into that episode. That means the streak did not stop at 29. It crossed that bright, shiny 30-game threshold and planted a flag.

Jamie Ding is more than a hot streak and a fast thumb on the buzzer. Official Jeopardy! listings identify Ding as a bureaucrat and law student from Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Reporting around his run also notes that he is a 2009 graduate of Grosse Pointe North High School, giving him a strong metro Detroit connection. His father, Dr. Yuchuan Ding, is a Wayne State University professor, and Wayne State itself has been publicly cheering the family on during the streak.

With 30 wins, Ding now sits fifth all-time in consecutive victories, behind only Ken Jennings, Amy Schneider, Matt Amodio, and James Holzhauer. Jennings still owns the mountain with 74 wins, while Holzhauer’s 32-game run is the next landmark directly in Ding’s path. On the money side, Jeopardy!’s official leaderboard places Ding among the all-time regular-season earners as well, and People reported that following his earlier April games he had already climbed to No. 5 in regular-season standings by wins and into the upper tier by earnings too.
