Apex Summary & Ending Explained: Why Does Ben Hunt Sasha? 

Can’t say if it’s an overall trend or if people are just that curious to see psychologically twisted plots, but the film industry is actively churning out movies and shows that really leave the viewers gasping in the end. One such recent release is Apex on Netflix, which broke all predetermined views and offered a mind-boggling plot.

Centred around Sasha, played by the incredibly talented and versatile Charlize Theron, the story follows her adventurous and risk-taking spirit as she climbs mountains, kayaks across turbulent rivers, and even traverses a national park all by herself. However, one such trip turns out to be a nightmare when she comes across an eccentric personality, Ben, played by Taron Egerton. 

What ensues is a precarious cat-and-mouse chase that leads to deadly consequences. Filled with psychological manipulation and a commentary on lone female adventurers’ safety, Apex does a great job of keeping the viewers on the edge of their seats. Apart from the two leads of the movie, the setting of the entire story, the wilderness, also comes alive to truly highlight the dangers involved.

How Does Tommy Die?

The movie begins with Sasha and her partner, Tommy, scaling a peak in the deadly winter weather. When the clouds shadow their climb, and the looming danger increases, they start to get off the mountain and reach safety. However, due to the oncoming debris from the top of the cliff and the wild winds that sway Sasha and Tommy, the stakes rise through the roof in this situation.

Tommy misplaces his footing and free-falls off the mountain. Though Sasha had the harness in place, the knot came off, and she ultimately had to let Tommy fall to save herself. The crucial last-minute decision changes the course of her life forever. 

This moment defines her character for the rest of the film. It introduces the central theme of survivor’s guilt, as Sasha questions whether she could have done more to save him. Not just that, she mourns the loss of her one true partner in life, whether she’s scaling peaks to surviving life in general. She lost the love of her life, and her zest for life is never the same. 

The film doesn’t present his death as purely accidental; instead, it lingers on Sasha’s psyche. She carries the weight of that decision into every action she takes later. Her journey to Australia is not just about honoring Tommy’s memory but about confronting her failure to save him.

What Makes Ben Hunt Sasha?

Ben’s decision to hunt Sasha is rooted in his warped worldview. As the title of the movie suggests, he sees himself as an “apex predator,” someone who exists outside societal rules and operates purely on instinct and dominance. His actions throughout the movie hint at a twisted mindset where he uses bird sounds and prey noises to attract the one he’s hunting. 

Unlike typical villains driven by revenge or greed, Ben is motivated by control and the thrill of the hunt. He doesn’t simply want to kill; he wants to hunt. Sasha becomes a target not because of who she is personally, but because she represents a challenge. Moreover, as we learn later on when Ben takes Sasha to his cave, Sasha is not the first one he has hunted. Over 20 people who appeared to have gone missing at the beginning of the movie are all later found in the cave with their livers taken out.

The film also ties his behavior to deeper psychological damage. His isolation and implied abusive past shape his identity, leading him to adopt animalistic traits and adopt a predatory perspective. In his mind, hunting is a way to assert power and create meaning. In the real world, men like Ben represent toxic masculinity and the idea of dominance over vulnerability. 

Though he tries to save Sasha and make her believe he’s friendly as she enters the National Park, he eventually reveals his true motives and manipulates Sasha to control her. Moreover, the way he talks about tribes and people preserving the animal instinct to remain alive in the wilderness also adds a layer of complexity to his personality. 

Is Ben a Cannibal?

Yes, the film strongly implies that Ben is a cannibal. This detail reinforces his complete detachment from human morality and pushes him further into the realm of a true predator. He reveals to Sasha that he has hunted many people in the past and harvested their livers for consumption. This way, he is able to truly consume and absorb their spirits into himself. 

In a horrible turn of events, he even reveals that all of this started with his mother, when he ate her liver to always have her with him. 

Cannibalism in Apex is not just shock value; it serves a thematic purpose. By consuming his victims, Ben blurs the line between human and animal, fully embracing the idea that he is a predator in the wild. It reflects his desire to dominate not just physically but existentially, erasing his victims entirely.

This aspect also heightens the stakes for Sasha. It intensifies the survival instinct that gets triggered in Sasha and underscores the film’s exploration of a true predator’s mindset.

Apex Ending: How Does Sasha Escape The National Park?

The climax of Apex centers on Sasha’s transformation from hunted to hunter. After enduring a relentless chase, she begins to use the environment and her survival skills to her advantage. She never gives up on getting out of the situation alive and always focuses on making the best of the worst scenario. 

In the final confrontation, Sasha manipulates Ben into climbing the mountain with her since he will die of an infection otherwise. Even though Ben thinks he has the upper hand and threatens to take Sasha down if something happens to him, he is proven wrong in the end. Sasha tricks him into making the climb, ultimately untying the harness and letting him fall off the mountain. Poetically, the mistake that has haunted her all throughout the movie is something she intentionally does in the end to make it out alive. 

The sequence is symbolic: climbing represents her struggle to rise above her trauma, while Ben’s attempts to drag her down reflect the guilt that has been holding her back. Ultimately, Sasha breaks free from him, both physically and emotionally. With this, she reclaims control over her life and refuses to remain a victim.

After escaping, Sasha encounters other people in the park and is able to alert authorities. The aftermath reveals the scale of Ben’s crimes, bringing closure not just for her but for the victims he left behind.

The film concludes with Sasha completing her original mission, honoring Tommy, and letting go of her guilt. Her survival is not framed as luck, but as a conscious choice to keep living and a determination to outmaneuver the predator.
