Spoiler Alert !!!
This article discusses major events from House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 5!
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 6 will arrive with Rhaenyra sitting inside the Red Keep while her enemies steadily turn King’s Landing against her. House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 5 gave her the capital, then made that victory look alarmingly fragile. Ormund Hightower has begun promoting Daeron as a rival king, Gold Cloaks loyal to Rhaenyra are being hunted, and Daemon already understands that the danger inside the city deserves more attention than another search for Aemond.
Elsewhere, Criston Cole’s campaign in the Riverlands is nearing a brutal reckoning, Aemond remains at Harrenhal with Alys Rivers, and Alicent’s attempt to protect Helaena has left both women in a precarious position. I kept expecting Rhaenyra’s conquest of King’s Landing to buy her one peaceful week. Westeros apparently found that suggestion offensive. With three chapters remaining in the eight-episode season, Episode 6 has several conflicts to advance and very little room for delay.

What to Expect From House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 6
House of the Dragon season 3 episode 5 | Credit: HBOEpisode 5 ended with Daemon discovering Ser Luthor Largent and several Gold Cloaks slaughtered around a table beneath the message, “A feast for traitors.” Ormund arranged the killings while distributing coins bearing Daeron’s likeness, and his campaign has now moved beyond distant military planning. He is attacking Rhaenyra’s authority inside the city she recently captured. The Episode 5 recap confirms that Ormund intends to replace every surviving claimant with Daeron, whether the young prince welcomes the crown or not.
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 6 should force Rhaenyra and Daemon to decide how they will answer that covert campaign. Their disagreement has already begun because Rhaenyra remains preoccupied with locating Aemond and Vhagar, while Daemon considers the murders within King’s Landing a more immediate threat. I suspect Ormund wants precisely that response. Every argument between the royal couple gives his agents more room to spread fear, weaken the Gold Cloaks, and make Daeron’s name familiar before his army reaches the capital.
The Riverlands may deliver the week’s bloodiest chapter. Criston ended Episode 5 accepting that his depleted force was unlikely to escape, while the next preview places him inside a frantic battle. Fabien Frankel has also discussed the approaching Butcher’s Ball, describing it as a highly isolated fight rather than a conventional grand battle. Criston has spent much of the war treating death as preferable to humiliation, and Episode 6 may finally test whether he can maintain that conviction when his soldiers begin paying the price beside him (via Frankel’s interview).
Tumbleton also remains central. The preview includes Vermithor flying above the city while Hugh Hammer watches from below, which suggests Rhaenyra’s largest claimed dragon could enter the conflict surrounding Ormund and Daeron. Hugh has enormous force at his command, although his loyalty has never looked entirely secure. Sending him toward a politically volatile stronghold sounds useful on paper and unnerving everywhere else.
Aemond’s recovery at Harrenhal should continue alongside his growing attachment to Alys. Episode 5 stripped him of Vhagar, physical confidence, and the authority he carried as prince regent. Alys has become his protector while Rhaenyra’s bounty attracts would-be killers. Their bond has been gentler than I expected, though tenderness around Aemond rarely survives for long. His return to Vhagar could place him back in the war with fresh resentment and fewer restraints.
Alicent and the pregnant Helaena must also find a way out of the hidden passage where their attempted escape stalled. Helaena’s condition gives Rhaenyra another political problem, especially if the unborn child can be used by Team Green as an alternative heir. Rhaena’s apparent appearance before Jeyne Arryn in the preview adds one more dispute to an already crowded hour. Ormund has become the season’s shrewdest threat, Criston is approaching the battle he seems desperate to die in, and Hugh’s proximity to Tumbleton should make every dragon rider nervous.
