Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains spoilers from Demon Slayer manga.
Demon Slayer’s fastest characters are not simply the ones who run the quickest. When Tengen Uzui rescued Hinatsuru and effortlessly cut through Daki, the Entertainment District arc showed just how terrifying the Sound Hashira could be. Or when Zenitsu turned into a flash of literal lightning with Godspeed, fans witnessed a side of the crybaby that was at par with the elite Hashiras.
But true speed in Demon Slayer goes way beyond flashy animation. Breathing Styles, Blood Demon Arts, perception, transformations, reflexes, and raw physical power all create different kinds of speed. To rank these combatants accurately, we evaluated characters’ feats by separating raw travel speed, reaction time, attack speed, and the Transparent World.
Here is how the absolute fastest characters stack up based on true combat physics and hard evidence:
10 Gyomei Blocked Moon Slashes & Wielded a Massive Spike Flail With Elite Mastery
Gyomei from Demon Slayer. [Credit: ufotable]Gyomei is last on this list only because the competition is absurdly strong. He is physically the strongest Hashira and showed extraordinary reaction speed by joining the battle against Kokushibo and eventually using the Transparent World (one of the strongest abilities in Demon Slayer) to help land attacks. His chained axe and flail also require exceptional timing and coordination.
In fact, Gyomei is explicitly portrayed as exceptionally fast despite his size and weapon. Gyomei takes the final spot because his incredible reaction time allows him to handle top-tier speedsters. But Sanemi or Tengen surpasses him in speed.
9 Sanemi Intercepted Kokushibo and Blasted Foes With Wind Breathing
Sanemi from Demon Slayer. [Credit: ufotable]Sanemi’s speed relies on explosive aggression and instinctual movement. In the Infinity Castle, his reaction speed allowed him to parry Kokushibo’s early Moon Breathing slashes and dodge lethal decapitations alongside Gyomei. His Wind Breathing techniques cover a wide area with rapid, unpredictable slashes.
Sanemi ranks above Gyomei in raw movement speed and agility, but sits below Tengen’s peak running pace and Zenitsu’s godspeed acceleration, as Sanemi requires his Demon Slayer Mark just to keep pace with top-tier demon reaction times.
8 Tengen Outpaced Gyutaro in the Entertainment District
As a former shinobi, Tengen possesses the highest raw running speed among the Hashira. Paired with his Musical Score Technique, his combat reaction speed allowed him to read rhythmic attack patterns and match Upper Rank 6 Gyutaro strike-for-strike while missing a hand and severely poisoned.
Gyutaro was a worthy opponent. However, with one arm short and heavily poisoned, Tengen went toe-to-toe with him, proving why he’s the fastest among the Hashiras in running speed. Tengen ranks above Sanemi in speed, but cannot rank higher because we witnessed him aura-farm during the Entertainment District Arc; but he still needs to show much more to upscale.
7 Zenitsu Obliterated Kaigaku With a Single Blinding Godspeed Flash
Zenitsu from Demon Slayer. [Credit: ufotable]It may be a hot take, but Zenitsu achieves the highest burst of pure movement speed among the lower-tier combatants. By creating Thunder Breathing Seventh Form: Honoikazuchi no Kami, Zenitsu accelerated at a rate that completely bypassed Upper Rank 6 Kaigaku’s perception, decapitating him in a single frame. His attack speed is practically instant over linear distances.
Zenitsu ranks above Tengen because his specialized Godspeed burst reaches higher top velocities, but he remains below Akaza, whose Compass Needle prediction would easily catch Zenitsu’s straightforward pathing.
6 Akaza Matched Rengoku and Surpassed Human Limits Through Power
Akaza from Demon Slayer. [Credit: ufotable]Akaza’s combat speed is governed by his Compass Needle technique, which senses an opponent’s fighting spirit and hostile intent, and instantly predicts incoming attacks. During the Mugen Train Arc, his reaction speed allowed him to match Rengoku’s explosive Flame Breathing forms, eventually overpowering him.
In the Infinity Castle, he matched Marked Giyu and Tanjiro simultaneously. Akaza sits above Zenitsu because his predictive reaction speed counters pure linear speed, but stays below Doma, whose casual movement reflexes completely outclassed higher-speed Hashira blitzes.
5 Doma Froze Shinobu in Place With Deceptive Glacial Reflexes
Doma from Demon Slayer. [Credit: ufotable]Doma’s speed is sinister because he barely appears to move at all. When fighting Shinobu, the fastest among the Hashira in raw thrusting attack speed, Doma casually reacted to her barrage, intercepted her movements, and absorbed her while matching her velocity effortlessly. He even stole Kanao’s sword and Inosuke’s mask mid-combat without them noticing after Shinobu’s death.
Doma ranks above Akaza primarily because he is Upper Rank Two, directly above Akaza, and has superior overall demonstrated combat ability. His speed ranking can be argued, but not on the basis that he effortlessly neutralized Shinobu’s maximum speed.
4 Kokushibo Cuts Muichiro in a Flash Using Transparent World Perception

In his fight against Muichiro, Kokushibo blitzed the marked Mist Hashira instantly, pinning him to a pillar before Muichiro could complete an attack.
His perception speed allows him to read muscle twitches before opponents move. Kokushibo outpaces Doma due to superior combat experience and martial speed as the Upper Moon Rank 1, but falls short of Muzan (the Demon King himself), whose chaotic tentacle blitzes operate on a sheer scale Kokushibo cannot match.
3 Muzan Shattered Hashira Defenses With Terrifying Tentacle Speed & Might
Muzan’s combat speed relies on his terrifying whip-like spine tentacles, which strike at blinding velocities across massive radii. During the Final Battle Arc, a heavily poisoned Muzan simultaneously overwhelmed marked Hashira, including Gyomei, Sanemi, and Giyu, severing limbs before they could react. His reaction speed also stems from possessing five brains and seven hearts.
Muzan ranks above Kokushibo because his raw attack volume and body-whip speed overwhelmed multiple Hashira at once, but sits below DKT’s superior physical potential and Yoriichi’s unrivaled slash speed.
2 Demon King Tanjiro Overwhelmed the Sun and Defied Death at Series End
This Demon Slayer manga panel features Tanjiro Kamado in his “Demon King” form. [Credit: Shueisha]After Muzan transferred his blood and remaining power into Tanjiro, Demon King Tanjiro (DKT) gained near-instantaneous regenerative speed, combat speed, sunlight immunity, and terrifying physical power. He effortlessly outpaced the remaining Hashira and showed back-whipped tentacles with unbridled physical speed and instinct.
While he lacks Yoriichi’s hyper-refined Transparent World precision, DKT surpasses peak Muzan due to complete immunity to sunlight, striking speed, and zero-lag regeneration ability. Although placing him second and above Muzan is highly debatable, DKT laid it off on the weakened Hashiras during the fight, which in itself gives him a plus point. For that, he ranks second.
1 Yoriichi Casually Blitzed Muzan and Outsped Time Itself in His Prime
Yoriichi from Demon Slayer. [Credit: ufotable]In his legendary encounter with Muzan, Yoriichi executed his Sun Breathing techniques to attack all of Muzan’s vital organs simultaneously so fast that the Demon King, possessing multi-brained instant reaction speed, could not even perceive the strike before his neck and heart were severed.
Decades later, as an 80-year-old man, Yoriichi slashed Kokushibo’s neck before the Upper Rank 1 demon could even draw his sword. Yoriichi is clearly the strongest and fastest swordsman shown in the series. That’s why he sits alone at the top.
Here’s a ranking table for the article:
