Legendary comic book writer Gerry Conway, who’s best known for creating iconic characters like The Punisher, has passed away at the age of 73. Marvel confirmed the news on April 27, 2026, in an official statement. 

We don’t know the cause of his death, but he previously suffered from pancreatic cancer before successfully overcoming the illness in 2023. He was born in Brooklyn in 1952, and his career took off at just 19, when he wrote The Amazing Spider-Man, replacing Stan Lee.

Gerry Conway’s The Punisher is now Marvel’s most enduring anti-hero, but apart from that, he is responsible for creating some of the most shocking moments in comic book history. Such as Gwen Stacy’s death, the Green Goblin arc, where he murders Peter Parker’s girlfriend, and more.

He also helped birth many notable villains like Jackal, Hammerhead, and Tombstone. Plus, he was the co-creator of supernatural figures like Man-Thing and assisted in the introduction of Werewolf by Night, expanding Marvel’s lore. Know this is Marvel but it's sort of scary since I was watching a video about early Jason Todd (pre-Crisis) and he introduced him and set him up; aside things like killing Gwen Stacey and the original Clone saga. Definite loss.
