The Walking Dead is largely considered Robert Kirkman‘s first triumph in the television space, long before the comics writer was dealing with Viltrumites and half-breed alien heroes. The popularity of the franchise might have waned a little in recent years, but that does not mean that AMC, the company that is currently producing TWD content, wants to stop anytime soon.

Multiple spin-offs about the show have been released over the years, some that ran in parallel with the original series, and some that came after. Currently, there is one announced spin-off that is in active development, and several spin-offs that are well into sequel seasons. There are also a multitude of rumors that are currently circulating about how AMC is looking to expand the franchise.

3 More Tales From The Walking Dead Universe

The show was first announced by AMC in April 2023 (as reported by ComicBook). Updates on the show have been slow, while other The Walking Dead projects have been released. The show was announced to be a short-form, six-part, scripted series that was going to take place in the wider universe of The Walking Dead. There have been speculations that the show is going to serve as the second season of Tales of the Walking Dead, thanks to its title.

Tales of the Walking Dead was an anthology series that explored the lives of new and existing characters in The Walking Dead universe. Scott M. Gimple was developing the show as an anthology series. There has been no clarification whether this was supposed to be a subtitle for the second season of Tales or if it was a different show altogether. Given how little information about the series has been shared by AMC, it is unlikely how popular the show could actually be.

2 The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3

Focusing on Negan and Maggie, Dead City has been an entry in the franchise that has received a lot of love from fans. There were concerns about how the show would perform given that it came as the nth spin-off set in The Walking Dead universe, but it benefited from being the show’s first sequel, focusing on fan favorite characters. The first season of the show tested well with critics and was praised for bringing new air to the franchise. However, fans and critics were less than pleased with the second season.

A third season for the show has been greenlit as of  July 2025, with The Walking Dead veteran Seth Hoffman taking over as showrunner, as reported by Variety. The reason that this show ranks second on the list is because of the fall-off that the second season received from fans. Even if the initial episodes of the show were praised for their brilliant changes to the environment, it remains to be seen how excited fans really will be about Season 3, even if it centers around a fan favorite character like Negan.

1 The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 4

Daryl Dixon was a spin-off that also received a lot of praise for following a fan favorite character. Norman Reedus‘ performance as Daryl remains one of the most iconic performances in the show. While the second season had a mild fall-off from the first, the third season was not only able to pick up the slack but also exceeded expectations. With the show having been greenlit for its fourth and final season (as per Variety), fans might be excited to see how the critically acclaimed show ends its run.

While Negan is one of the most important characters in the fandom, Daryl’s show simply does the character more justice than Negan does to his. That, combined with a fanbase that agrees with critics, the show definitely resonate more with fans than Dead City. However, it must also be noted that Dead City has had less time to earn the fans’ trust.

More The Walking Dead Spin-Offs Could Be On The Way

The Walking Dead has been one of the most long running franchise s to come out of Hollywood, with numerous spin-offs, and plenty of material still left to explore. There is a fandom that still enjoys what the show brings to the table and hopes that AMC does not pull the plug on the franchise. With strong writing that still manages to carry the franchise, fans are sure that The Walking Dead is marching towards more spin-offs.

One of the strongest rumors that has been circulating about the franchise is that there is a crossover in the works at AMC that is going to tie all the spin-offs that have stemmed from the show. Regarding this spin-off, The Walking Dead CCO Scott M. Gimple said (as per TVLine):

Andrew Lincoln has shared that conversations were happening in 2025 about a possible way for his character, Rick Grimes, to return to the show. No further details have emerged about the project.
