Spoiler Warning for George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood

House of the Dragon Season 3 is fast approaching, and fire will reign once again as dragons of House Targaryen take the fight to the skies. With the series finally pushing deeper into the bloody civil war known as Dance of the Dragons, the battles ahead promise more intense aerial clashes, and this time, we’ll see the sheer size and scale of these legendary beasts.

The largest and oldest dragons inspire fear for good reason; they’re battle-tested and devastating in war, but the smaller ones can be feisty and dangerous, too. So, here are the dragons we expect to see in the third season, ordered by their size based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood:

12 Moondancer: The Underrated Beast of Dragonstone

moondancer house of the dragonMoondancer in House of the Dragon / Credits: HBO

Moondancer is one of the smallest yet most agile dragons, known for her speed and quick reflexes in the air. Bonded to Baela Targaryen, she reflects her rider’s bold and fearless nature despite her relatively young age. Unlike the massive war dragons of the Dance, Moondancer relies on speed rather than brute strength, making her especially dangerous in fast-moving encounters.

We’ll most likely see Baela and Moondancer in action in Season 3, although we might have to wait until the storyline reaches the Fall of Dragonstone, as this would probably be the biggest event for both characters. After Aegon II seizes the castle, Baela will be able to escape and mount Moondancer. She and Aegon, with their dragons, will meet in the sky and fight fiercely.

11 Vermax: Prince Jacaerys’ Young Flame

Vermax is a young but growing dragon bonded to Jacaerys Velaryon. We’ve seen them work together in the series when the prince was training him in the Dragonpit in Season 1 and when he went to the Eyrie and to Winterfell to gather the support of House Arryn and House Stark.

We’ll definitely be seeing Vermax in action in Season 3, especially during the Battle of the Gullet, where he and his rider will play a crucial part. In the book, Vermax flew too low and was wounded, causing him to crash into a burning galley. Jace leaps free but gets struck by a crossbow bolt.

The series will most likely follow this as the young prince’s death becomes instrumental in Rhaenyra’s character development and the succeeding events during the civil war.

10 Tessarion: The Blue Queen of the Skies

We’ve only seen glimpses of Tessarion in the past, but the blue dragon bonded to Daeron Targaryen will finally steal the spotlight in Season 3. The youngest son of Alicent and Viserys spent much of his early life in Oldtown, but this time, he and his mount are now ripe for battle.

In the book, Tessarion was described as one-third in size compared to Vermithor. Despite being young and only recently able to take flight, she was nimble in the air. She and Daeron will fight fearlessly during the Dance of the Dragons, in which the prince will earn his nickname Daeron the Daring.

9 Seasmoke: The Silver Shadow of the Sea

Originally bonded to Laenor Velaryon and now the mount of Addam of Hull, Seasmoke becomes an important part of the civil war, and we should expect to see him and his rider fight during the Battle of the Gullet and the Fall of King’s Landing. The source material said that Seasmoke is twice the size of Tessarion.

Seasmoke bonding with Addam was both a surprise and a relief for the Blacks. When Hugh Hammer and Ulf White betrayed them, the legitimized bastard of House Velaryon was ready to prove his loyalty even at the cost of his life.

8 Sunfyre: King Aegon II’s Fallen Dragon

Sunfyre was badly injured after the Battle at Rook’s Rest, but the golden dragon is definitely not dead. Due to the severity of his wounds, he was left in the same spot he had fallen, with men looking after him.

Formidable despite his youth, Sunfyre was said to be the most beautiful dragon ever seen across the known world. His bond with King Aegon was noticeably strong, and in the moment after he and his rider had fallen from the sky, Sunfyre still instinctively protected him.

Since one of his wings was half torn, we’re not sure if we’d see the dragon take to the skies in the early part of the season. Sunfyre will most likely fly again during the Fall of Dragonstone to fight Baela and Moondancer. Also, let’s not forget the fact that Aegon would later feed Rhaenyra to his dragon, which most likely will happen in the final season.

7 Syrax: The Black Queen’s Trusted Companion

Syrax is the dragon bonded to Rhaenyra Targaryen. She is huge and strong, but not battle-experienced or as fearless as Daemon’s mount, Caraxes. Most of the time, she is in relative comfort at Dragonstone, kept in chains and exceedingly well-fed.

While Syrax had not hunted for years during the beginning of the civil war, she still displayed immense power during battle. We will definitely see the dragon in several aerial conflicts this Season 3, as she helps defend Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne along with the rest of her supporters.

6 Caraxes: Daemon’s Blood Wyrm of Chaos

One of the most fearsome dragons that ever lived, Caraxes is bonded to Daemon Targaryen. Also known as the Blood Wyrm, the dragon mirrors his rider’s ruthless, unpredictable nature and love of warfare. A massive and formidable beast, he was about half the size of Vhagar.

With Daemon poised to return to battle mode in Season 3, he and his dragon will certainly bring in all the action. Both are expected to join Rhaenyra and Syrax as they seize King’s Landing. The most awaited event for Daemon and Caraxes, however, would be the Battle Above the Gods Eye, which will likely take place in the fourth season.

5 Dreamfyre: The Quiet Flame of Queen Helaena

Dreamfyre is bonded to Helaena Targaryen, although she rarely rides her. One of the older and more formidable dragons, the pale blue creature reflects a quieter, more restrained presence compared to the other war-driven beasts. Still, she possesses immense size and power.

Much of Dreamfyre’s life was spent within the Dragonpit, which limited her direct involvement in early battles. It’s uncertain if we’re going to see more of the dragon in Season 3, although the book reveals that when Helaena killed herself, her dragon roared and broke the chains that bound her.

Because of the major changes in the storyline, it’s hard to guess how this scene will play out, but we’re guessing Helaena’s and Dreamfyre’s deaths would occur in the final season.

4 Silverwing: A Veteran of the Old Targaryen Era

Formerly the mount of Queen Alysanne Targaryen, she became the dragon of the bastard Ulf White. As one of the older and larger dragons at the start of the civil war, she was also one of the most powerful second-generation dragons that hatched from the Targaryens’ original three.

In Season 2, we saw Silverwing resting in a cave when Ulf discovered her. They bonded quickly and were later seen flying above King’s Landing. Both will have a huge role in the upcoming season, especially during the Battle of the Gullet and the First Battle of Tumbleton, where Ulf would later betray the Blacks.

3 Sheepstealer: The Untamed Beast of the Wild

Sheepstealer is described in the book as a skinny brown dragon, although his size could be far larger than what was depicted in the show. It is possible that, because he’s a wild creature, he isn’t well-fed. Regardless, the dragon is an unclaimed beast known for its elusive nature and habit of feeding on livestock.

Fans saw him at the end of Season 2, which hints that Rhaena Targaryen might claim him as her mount. This would be a major diversion from the source material since Nettles, a character that’s absent in the show, was the first and only rider of Sheepstealer. If Rhaena successfully bonds with the wild dragon, they could become a tour de force in the upcoming battle.

2 Vermithor: The Bronze Fury Claimed by Hugh Hammer

The second largest living dragon during the Dance of the Dragons, Vermithor, bonded with the bastard Hugh Hammer during the Red Sowing episode. He was almost a hundred years old during the Civil War, but still fearsome and massive in size.

Like Silverwing and Ulf, Vermithor and Hugh will both play significant parts in Season 3 as teased in the previous installment. They will initially fight for the Blacks, but later turn against them and will be known in history as the Two Betrayers.

1 Vhagar: The Last Living Legend of Old Valyria

Undeniably the largest and oldest living dragon in the series, Vhagar is a towering relic of Valyria’s fading power. Bonded with Aemond Targaryen, she remains deadly in combat with her sheer size always intimidating her opponents.

Vhagar will certainly steal the spotlight again in Season 3, as Aemond and Ser Criston Cole march from King’s Landing into the riverlands. Her most anticipated scene, though, is the Battle Above the Gods Eye, where Aemond and Daemon would fight to the death. As mentioned earlier, this event will most likely happen in Season 4.
