Hours after Euphoria’s season finale aired on Sunday night, HBO confirmed that the show was officially over.
Creator Sam Levinson also announced the news on the New York Times’ “Popcast” podcast.
The show coming to an end shouldn’t necessarily be a surprise given how series lead Zendaya has said in interviews that she thought Season 3 would be its last.
And if it weren’t the drama’s final season, it would have been Zendaya’s, as her character Rue was the latest major character to meet her loved ones in the great beyond.
Unlike the savage killing of Jacob Elordi’s Nate in last week’s episode, Rue’s was less brutal, and gets a reunion of sorts with Fezco (the late Angus Cloud, who died of acute intoxication after an accidental overdose in 2023) and her mother Leslie (Nika King).
In the episode, Ali (Coleman Domingo) got to avenge Rue’s death by killing Alamo (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), who laced the pills he knew Rue would take with fentanyl.

Why kill her off?
In a behind-the-scenes look at the finale following the episode, Levinson spoke about the decision to kill off Rue.
“It just felt like the honest ending,” he said, per People. “The honest ending is that people like Rue don’t make it.”
Levinson continued: “People relapse. They f*** up. They’re not ready to get clean. And they weren’t dying like they are now, with the influx of fentanyl into this country.”
He added: “I wanted to tell this story for Angus [Cloud] and for people who weren’t granted a second chance.”
Zendaya, who won two Emmys for the series’ previous seasons, is also seen saying an emotional goodbye to the crew after wrapping her final scenes.
“I just want to say, thank you,” she said while on the set. “I’m incredibly grateful for every single one of you; many of you have been here since the beginning and watched me grow up. It’s been such a pleasure and an honour. Thank you so much.”

OnlyFans? Only Sydney
As for Maddy (Alexa Demie) and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), they grieved Jacob before the latter appeared to set up her future in the OnlyFans world.
Levinson had nothing but praise for Sweeney and how she handled her racy storyline throughout the series’ last season.
“I think she’s a totally fearless actor,” he told “Popcast” hosts Joe Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli. “She’s also just wonderfully professional, and shows up just game every day. I adore working with her, because there’s such a flexibility in terms of the performance.”
Sweeney’s storyline was left open-ended with her final scene taking place alongside Maude Apatow, where Cassie was washing her sex toys while her sister, Lexi (Apatow), got emotional over Rue’s (Zendaya) death.
Ahead of Sunday’s episode, Sweeney took to Instagram with several behind-the-scenes, boob-tastic photos from the show’s final season.
“It’s called… acting,” she captioned the post.

Levinson noted that he considered Sweeney not going buck naked during her scenes.
“When I first wrote it … I thought, ‘Well, maybe, we shoot all of this, and we don’t have any nudity,’” the showrunner said on the podcast.
“I was talking to her about, maybe, there’s ways to shoot around certain [things] — and she looked at me, and she’s like, ‘Are you kidding? I’m playing an OnlyFans model.’”
Duh.
