On the hit show Game of Thrones, Missandei and Daenerys Targaryen were pretty tight on-screen, there is no doubt about that, but little did fans know that Emilia Clarke and Nathalie Emmanuel took their friendship to a whole new level off-camera. On a set often dominated by male actors, the two actresses quickly became inseparable, forming a close bond that extended beyond the show.

So much so that Emilia Clarke didn’t hesitate to have Nathalie Emmanuel’s back, stepping in as a loyal friend during an unpleasant situation when an extra made an insulting comment about Emmanuel’s on-screen attire.

Emilia Clarke and Nathalie Emmanuel Were Absolute Besties Both On and Off the Game of Thrones Set!

Season 3 of Game of Thrones saw Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys first encounter Missandei, who was a slave to one of Astapor’s masters. While Daenerys was negotiating to trade one of her dragons for the Unsullied army, she also insisted on taking Missandei with her upon seeing her condition.

From that point on, Nathalie Emmanuel‘s Missandei pledged her loyalty to the Mother of Dragons. On set, Emilia Clarke was thrilled to finally have a gal pal around, and naturally, their on-screen friendship quickly blossomed into a real-life bond.

In a chat with British Vogue, Nathalie Emmanuel spilled the tea on how she and Emilia Clarke became besties on set. Clarke was practically on a mission to find some fabulous female friends to hang with, and Emmanuel was more than happy to step into that role. She said,

Emilia and I got on like a house on fire from the beginning. When I joined the cast, she had already been shooting Game of Thrones for a few years, and she was definitely ready to have some female energy around her.

Speaking to People magazine, Emmanuel also revealed how Clarke inspired her with her craft, she stated,

Emilia, as a friend and colleague, is just such a joy, I really have thoroughly loved working with her. I loved learning from her. And we just check in with each other every so often. She’s such a beast. As a woman, she really picks herself up and keeps going. … She’s really inspiring, I’m so proud of her.

Turns out, everyone deserves a friend like Clarke! But that’s not all, Clarke once stood up to a male actor who made an inappropriate comment about Missandei’s costume.

What Did Emilia Clarke Do When a Co-Star Made an Inappropriate Comment on Emmanuel’s Outfit?

Missandei, Daenerys Targaryen’s right-hand woman, is one of Game of Thrones’ most beloved characters and a standout for her distinct style. Before becoming Khaleesi’s trusted interpreter, Missandei lived as a slave in Slaver’s Bay, and her wardrobe reflects her journey from obscurity to prominence.

Her look was refreshingly simple and understated, perfectly suited for the show’s setting. Missandei favored sleeveless cotton dresses in muted, flattering earth tones, which were both practical and elegant for her role. When she was not in flowing dresses, she opted for minimalistic two-piece outfits that kept her cool and comfortable. Long sleeves and elaborate fabrics did not fit her lifestyle, so her style was all about ease and functionality.

In the same British Vogue chat, Emmanuel revealed how Emilia Clarke had her back when a male extra made an inappropriate comment about her character’s costume,

She and I always looked out for each other. If you’re the only girls on a male-dominated set, it bonds you in a certain way. For example, in my first season, my costume was pretty revealing, and there was an incident with an extra who made a comment about it on set – I mean, typical – and Emilia straightaway had my back. It got handled.

And like the true friend she is, Clarke swooped in and handled the situation like a total boss. Both actresses were over the moon to have each other in their lives, and their heartwarming friendship only made their on-screen chemistry even more magical. The two totally nailed their roles and proved that great friendships make for even better TV!
