Dylan Larkin will still be the elephant in the room at Detroit Red Wings training camp, but he and the team have taken some steps to avoid being a distraction on the ice.

The Wings and Larkin, who has caused dissent with a trade request, released dual statements on Friday, saying that he will attend camp next week — but he won’t be captain of the Original Six franchise when play begins.
Larkin cited cordial talks in the past few days with the club, which is in the midst of seeking a new hockey operations boss after Steve Yzerman took a new role. It led to Larkin agreeing to report to the team and picking up the trade issue when a general manager is selected.

“I’ve appreciated those candid conversations,” Larkin said. “When new leadership is in place, we will further discuss the direction of the team. We’ll keep those conversations private and I will focus on the season ahead and on the guys in that room.”
Dealing specially with the trade request, the club’s statement underlined Larkin is under contract and any further conversations on his future were private.
But it was emphatic that “the Red Wings will begin the 2026-27 season without a captain being named,” adding the incoming leadership will follow up on that subject at a later date.

Larkin and the departure of Yzerman have been major distractions for a club that has seen its rebuild and playoff hopes compromised.
The 30-year-old centre won gold at the Winter Olympics in Italy earlier this year and produced 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games for the Wings during the 2025-26 NHL season.
