Appearing as a distinctive pattern on a swordsman’s body, the Mark dramatically enhances physical abilities such as strength, speed, stamina, and perception, allowing its wielder to push far beyond their normal limits. But this power comes with a deadly curse: most Demon Slayers who awaken the Mark are destined to die before reaching 25.

Its origins are tied to Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the first known marked swordsman, and its awakening can even spread from one marked fighter to others under extreme conditions. Yet possessing the Mark does not automatically make every user equal. Their breathing styles, physical gifts, combat experience, opponents, and feats determine just how devastating that power-up becomes.

10 Genya Changes Battle Tides With a Temporary Slayer Mark

Genya is the giant asterisk on this list. After consuming part of Kokushibo’s flesh sword, his body develops Kokushibo-like traits, including a Mark-like pattern, while his demon-eating ability grants extraordinary temporary power and regeneration. However, the manga never definitively establishes this as a conventional Demon Slayer Mark. His contribution against Kokushibo was still vital: his Blood Demon Art helped immobilize the Upper Rank long enough for the others to finish the fight. That unusual, temporary boost makes him #10, not a standard Mark user.

9 Mitsuri Brings Total Chaos With Pure Heart and Heavy Hitting

Mitsuri’s Mark dramatically amplifies an already bizarre physical package. Her unusual muscle density gives her extraordinary strength and flexibility, while Love Breathing turns her whip-like Nichirin sword into a nightmare of unpredictable angles. After awakening the Mark during the Hantengu battle, she could withstand Zohakuten’s relentless attacks long enough to keep him occupied. Still, her Upper Rank performance is less decisive than Muichiro’s solo victory over Gyokko, while her later Muzan showing lacks the sustained dominance of the higher-ranked fighters.

Muichiro’s #8 spot hides an absurd ceiling. He became a Hashira at just 14 after only two months of training, then awakened his Mark against Gyokko and defeated Upper Rank Five. But Kokushibo exposed the gap between prodigious talent and seasoned combat experience: Muichiro was initially overwhelmed and severely injured before his Mark, red blade and sheer determination allowed him to become crucial to the Upper Rank One battle. Even after being mortally wounded, he remained conscious long enough to turn his blade red and pin Kokushibo, creating an opening for the others. His potential was enormous, but his untimely and tragic death at such a young age keeps him here.

Obanai’s Mark arrives unusually late, during the battle against Muzan, but its impact is immediate. The boost lets him move, dodge and attack despite horrific injuries, while his Serpent Breathing and Kaburamaru compensate for his increasingly limited vision. His contribution against Muzan is particularly impressive because he remains effective deep into a battle against the series’ strongest demon. He ranks below Giyu because his Mark has less extensive Upper Rank combat evidence, but his final-battle performance comfortably puts him ahead of the younger marked Hashira.

6 Giyu Drops His Cool Boy Persona for Total Destruction Mode

Giyu’s Mark appears during his battle with Akaza, immediately pushing his speed high enough to force the Upper Rank Three demon to adapt. His Water Breathing and self-created Eleventh Form, Dead Calm, give him exceptional defensive control, while his Mark lets him survive and continue attacking against Akaza’s overwhelming offense. However, Akaza eventually adjusts to the boost, revealing the gap between Giyu and the very top of this ranking. His technical brilliance earns #6, but his overall feats don’t quite match Sanemi’s Kokushibo performance.

5 Sanemi Goes Absolute Berserk Mode and Terrifies the Villains

Sanemi’s Mark turns an already vicious fighter into an endurance monster. Against Kokushibo, his Wind Breathing, extraordinary pain tolerance and Marechi blood allowed him to remain useful even after taking devastating injuries. He and Marked Gyomei eventually fought Upper Rank One together, though Kokushibo still overwhelmed them when he stopped holding back. Sanemi’s final-battle performance also proves his durability wasn’t a one-fight fluke. He falls below Gyomei and endgame Tanjiro because his offensive ceiling is less overwhelming, but his resilience makes #5 extremely comfortable.

Tanjiro’s Sun Breathing makes him an intriguing exception candidate, since Yoriichi was the only known Mark bearer to survive beyond that age. His immense late-game ceiling earns #4, but his shorter experience and inconsistent condition keep him below Gyomei and Sanemi.

If Yoriichi is mythology, Gyomei is the terrifying modern benchmark. Even before awakening his Mark, he was regarded as the Corps’ strongest fighter, and Kokushibo recognized that his physical abilities had been trained to an extraordinary peak. Once Marked, Gyomei could contend directly with Upper Rank One, later accessing the Transparent World and a red Nichirin blade. His combination of immense strength, Stone Breathing, weapon mastery, and battle experience gives him the strongest overall case among the living-era human Hashira.

2 Kokushibo Steals the Show as the Ultimate Boss Level Monster

Kokushibo’s placement is ridiculous for a reason: he possessed the Mark before becoming a demon and then spent centuries combining it with Moon Breathing, monstrous regeneration, and unparalleled swordsmanship. During the Infinity Castle battle, even Marked Gyomei and Sanemi struggled to contain him. It ultimately required Gyomei, Sanemi, Muichiro, and Genya’s combined efforts to inflict serious damage. The fact that Kokushibo could overwhelm multiple Marked fighters simultaneously makes #2 an easy call.

1 Yoriichi Drops the Mic as the Undefeated Legend of All Time

Yoriichi doesn’t merely claim #1; he practically breaks the ranking system. Born with the Demon Slayer Mark, he developed an extraordinary connection to Sun Breathing and avoided the fate that doomed later Mark users to die by 25, ultimately living into his mid-80s. His combat record is even more absurd: Muzan, the Demon King himself, was terrified by Yoriichi’s presence, while the swordsman nearly ended him in their first encounter. Even in old age, Yoriichi remained lethal enough to overwhelm Kokushibo. No other marked fighter combines his longevity, technique, speed and overwhelming dominance quite like him.
