With the release of Dan Levy’s latest crime comedy production, titled Big Mistakes, people have been loving the star’s return to comedy television after his last Emmy-winning series, Schitt’s Creek. And along with an absolutely chaotic, tense, but equally humorous narrative, the show also boasts a great cast and their subsequent character work throughout the first season.

Thus, let’s take a closer look at all the major characters introduced in the new Netflix series and how they affected the overall narrative of the first season through their presence and importance to the story.

1 Dan Levy: Nick

Coming to the leading star of the series, Dan Levy plays the role of Nicholas Dardano, often referred to as Nicky by his family. Professionally, Nicky is a reverend at his local church, which means he has to hide his sexuality from almost everyone since he’s also gay and in a relationship with Tareq Rivera.

While he tries his best to do everything by the book and appease everyone, even God, the initial theft of a seemingly cheap necklace by his sister, Morgan, leads him into a life of crime, which he has no choice but to dive deeper into to stay alive.

Still, even with the best of intentions, Nick somehow manages to find himself in the worst possible situation, partly because of his good nature to help people, and partly because of his meek character.

2 Taylor Ortega: Morgan

Completing the second half of the main dysfunctional Dardano sibling duo is Morgan Dardano, the actual firstborn of the family, since Nick was adopted. By profession, she is a failed actress-turned-public school teacher who has had her fair share of worldly experiences struggling in New York to find acting success.

All the problems that both Nick and she face are due to her stealing a cheap-looking necklace for her dying maternal grandmother, which turns out to be a valuable jewel worth tens of thousands of dollars. But where Morgan shines is her ability to get things done when Nicky drops the ball, something that the criminal boos who force them into criminal jobs find extremely useful.

3 Laurie Metcalf: Linda

Coming to the matriarch of the family, Linda Morelli, played by actress Laurie Metcalf, famous for playing motherly roles in Hollywood, is the typical caricature of a god-loving suburban American mother of three, who includes Nick, Morgan, and Natalie. She runs the Morelli Hardware store in town and is seen fighting for the position of town Mayor throughout the first season.

Despite being a strong, independent woman, she’s really concerned with her image in public, partly because of her Mayoral candidacy, but also because she wants that recognition for the townfolk. But when it comes to her family, her maternal instincts kick in, and she becomes one badass mother who doesn’t take crap from anyone.

4 Abby Quinn: Natalie

Dubbed the ‘Perfect Child’ of the family, Natalie is the youngest of her siblings, and thus, feels the need to excel at everything where her brother and sister are just average. This is also the reason why, throughout the series, you will get a feeling of ‘Teacher’s Pet’ from her.

But credit where credit’s due, she does take her job extremely seriously, and does it very well. In fact, if it hadn’t been for her bringing the rival Mayoral candidate’s scandals to light, Linda may have lost her position as Mayor in the end.

5 Jack Innanen: Max

Jack Innanen plays the role of Max, the long-time lovestruck boyfriend of Morgan Dardano. When he’s first introduced in the series, viewers may feel his clinginess to his girlfriend cute, but as the series progresses, you will realise that he’s extremely obsessive and somewhat childish.

And later, you come to realise that since he was the only child from a rich household, he has some major brat energy. He’s constantly throwing minor jabs and taunts at Morgan when she doesn’t do things the way he wants, which fits the dysfunctional character vibe of the entire series.

6 Elizabeth Perkins: Annette

Despite Elizabeth Perkins’ role in the series as Annette Zorfrea may feel simple and less important as the mother of Max, the finale episode of Big Mistakes brings her true identity into the spotlight, and the entire narrative shifts towards her character.

But before the big twist, she’s depicted as a strong and successful businesswoman who built her empire in the real estate business after her husband passed away. She also cares and loves her son deeply, which might explain why Max acts spoiled so much over the course of the first season.

7 Jacob Gutierrez: Tareq

Jacob Gutierrez plays the role of Tareq Rivera, a house contractor by trade and the secret boyfriend of Nick’s introduced in the first episode. Along with being handsome and resourceful, he’s also an understanding person, which explains why he always respected Nick’s wish of keeping their relationship private due to his job as a reverend.

Tareq also acts as the moral and emotional anchor for Nick, where he takes care of him during his initial days doing various odd jobs for Ivan.

8 Boran Kuzum: Yusuf

The character of Yusuf is the one who brings both Morgan and Nick into the world of crime after Morgan steals the valuable necklace from his shop (something for which he was significantly to blame). And once he pushes the siblings to retrieve that necklace from their dead grandmother’s casket, Ivan comes to know about them, and the rest is history.

Although it’s also because of Yusuf that they are saved from the Miami massacre of Ivan and Andrei, as well as the top brass of the Brazilian Cartel. But then again, he pushes them into even deeper trouble with the Italian Mob in the final episode.
