Avengers: Doomsday Director Finally Addresses Doctor Doom-Iron Man Connection

Fans have been asking this question for years: How is Iron Man connected to Doctor Doom? If at all they are connected. Well, it seems that Avengers: Doomsday co-director Anthony Russo has finally addressed the question. Replying to the question with something that almost resembles an answer.

During an Avengers Endgame: Encore Q&A, Anthony Russo talked to GamesRadar+ about one of the most important questions in Marvel history. The director mentioned that it is “certainly a pregnant question. Before adding that the team is “fully committed to Robert Downey as Victor Von Doom”.

The director also mentioned that there is curiosity about the casting of Robert Downey Jr. both as Iron Man and Doom, but concluded that “everything is best left for the theater.” This is nothing new considering the fact that Anthony and Joe Russo are known for keeping secrets until the very end.

Joe and Anthony Russo are known for keeping their secrets close to their chests. We have seen all of it happening before in Marvel, where major reveals are kept undisclosed until the very end (for obvious reasons). The director has been ambiguous about the Doctor Doom-Iron Man connection in the past.

There have been moments where they have said there’s no connection between Tony Stark and Doctor Doom, while other times mentioning Robert Downey Jr.’s casting was vital to the entire storyline. They did tease that the connection remains “a pregnant question” while also addressing that it remains a curious question, which means that there is a possibility that theorists might be on the right track.

In fact, there are several popular theories that perfectly explain how Iron Man (or rather Tony Stark) could become Doom in alternate universes.

Popular Theories That Connect Iron Man and Doctor Doom

One of the most prominent theories out there suggests that Doctor Doom is a variant of Tony Stark from an alternate universe. However, that would be too shallow a theory for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Instead, a popular theory suggests a darker path for Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. After escaping the cave in Afghanistan at the start of Iron Man, Tony Stark could become disillusioned with humanity’s flawed system. This theory fits well with the sound of hammering heard at the end of Avengers: Endgame over a black screen. Wanting global peace, he would want to control the Earth by donning the mask of Victor von Doom, slowly transforming into the Latverian ruler that we fear.

On the other hand, Steve Rogers deciding to stay back with Peggy Carter in Avengers: Endgame could potentially develop an alternate universe where Tony Stark might have a grudge against Steve Rogers for failing to protect his parents (who end up getting killed by Bucky Barnes).

The theories are numerous, but as Anthony Russo said, all will be answered in theaters. The newer post-credit scenes from Avengers Endgame: Encore might also have a hint or two about Doom’s origins and the potential Iron Man-Doctor Doom connection. Or it could simply be all just a big coincidence.
