Avengers: Doomsday Costumes at SDCC Marvel Booth Confirm Latverian Witch and Sentinels

Marvel didn’t even wait for its Hall H panel to start handing out surprises. On San Diego Comic-Con’s preview night, the Marvel booth opened up with a row of costumes from Avengers: Doomsday, and two of the displays took over the internet within hours.

One was a character nobody had seen before, labelled only as the Latverian Witch. The other wasn’t a costume at all, but the head of a Sentinel sitting under the lights. Here’s a look at those two costumes.

The Latverian Witch outfit is impossible to miss. Photos from the floor show long green robes that borrow heavily from Doctor Doom‘s own look. The costume is complete with a hooded cloak, metal clasps at the shoulders, and a green belt with a silver diamond-design buckle. Silver metal gloves cover the hands, and the face is hidden behind a silver mask that clearly echoes Doom’s.

The whole thing was staged in front of a green stained-glass window, which only added to the feel of Latveria’s royal court. Then there’s the Sentinel head, which comes with its own set of questions. Here’s what both reveals could mean.

Who Is the Latverian Witch in Marvel Comics?

The Latverian Witch isn’t an actual character in Marvel Comics. It appears that the costume billed as the Latverian Witch is something Marvel Studios has built from scratch. That said, there are a couple of comic figures the costume could be pointing to.

The most obvious is Cynthia von Doom, Victor’s mother. She was a Romani sorceress who made a deal with Mephisto for power, and her soul ended up trapped in his realm because of it. A big chunk of Doom’s story is built around trying to free her, and he eventually pulls it off with help from Doctor Strange.

Another theory points to a Wanda Maximoff variant playing the Latverian Witch. Fans have connected the costume’s magical styling to Elizabeth Olsen‘s Scarlet Witch, and there’s actual comic history behind it. In the 2010-11 Avengers: The Children’s Crusade storyline, a memory-wiped Wanda was found living in Latveria with Doom.

He had manipulated her before eventually stealing her chaos power for himself. A Latverian version of Wanda serving Doom would track with that.

Sentinels Return to Live-Action After X-Men: Days of Future Past

The Sentinel head is the other big talking point, and it lines up with something the third character teaser of Avengers: Doomsday already teased. Eagle-eyed fans spotted the mutant-hunting robots in the background of the shot where James Marsden’s Cyclops fires an optic blast, and the booth display has now given everyone a proper look at them.

The design has clearly changed. In 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, the 1973 Mark I models were bulky purple machines with rounded helmet heads and an almost plastic, retro finish. However, the future-timeline versions in this movie were sleek and scale-covered, shifting their bodies with adaptive tech.

The Doomsday version sits somewhere else entirely. It’s heavier, more armored, and far closer to the classic purple giants from the comics. The prop also tells a story. Segmented metal plating, glowing eyes, and loose cabling hanging from the severed neck all suggest this Sentinel took serious damage before it went down.
