DC’s ‘Lanterns’ Trailer Unleashes Cosmic Murder Mystery with Sinestro and Guy Gardner

The DC Universe is taking a dark, grounded turn into prestige television as HBO officially dropped the explosive new trailer for Lanterns at San Diego Comic-Con. Premiering August 16, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max, the series flips cosmic expectations on their head by bringing intergalactic law enforcement straight into a dark, grounded crime story.

Unlike typical high-flying space adventures, Lanterns presents Hal Jordan as a battle-worn operative looking to train John Stewart as his permanent replacement rather than a sidekick. The dynamic takes a sharp turn in the new trailer, with appearances from franchise staples, including Ulrich Thomsen as Hal’s infamous mentor, Sinestro, and Nathan Fillion reprising his role as the abrasive, bowl-cut Guy Gardner.

At the trailer, Aaron Pierre shared the excitement about his character, Stewart, and said:

As per the show’s official logline, it will follow intergalactic cops drawn into an Earth-based murder mystery. The investigation will lead the intergalactic lawmen into friction with local Nebraska law enforcement, led by Sheriff Kerry (Kelly Macdonald). Between tense mentor-mentee banter, lethal alien tech, and shadowy conspiracies, showrunner Chris Mundy and co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King are crafting an atmospheric noir thriller where mortality hangs over every ring construct.
