The filmmaker he most reminds me of is Noah Baumbach, though Baumbach’s films are far quirkier. Within the deeply personal stories he crafts, Mills casts an array of extremely talented actors and manages to bring the best out of their performances. There’s a nuance to his storytelling that is lost in most mainstream outings, and with each film, Mills solidifies himself as a master of his craft.

Criterion Collection‘s I’ll Remind You of Everything: The Films of Mike Mills brings together Beginners, 20th Century Women, and C’mon C’mon in a gorgeous six-disc 4K box set that celebrates the filmmaker’s unique style. I’d previously seen C’mon C’mon, but Beginners and 20th Century Women were first-time viewings. They’d both been on my watchlist for some time, and the newly released set was the perfect excuse to pull the trigger. Watching the films consecutively allowed for an incredibly immersive and emotionally charged experience. The relationships at the center of each story are different, but anchored by the same themes love conquering sadness.

Video Quality

Criterion has once again delivered exceptional presentations across the board. All three films receive director-approved 4K restorations with Dolby Vision HDR, preserving the naturalistic look that defines Mills’ work.

Rather than chasing exaggerated colors or razor-sharp artificial detail, these transfers embrace the intimate photography that makes each film feel so authentic. Beginners and 20th Century Women feature warm, inviting color palettes with impressive fine detail and beautifully rendered film grain, while C’mon C’mon‘s stunning black-and-white cinematography has never looked better. The HDR grading subtly enhances contrast without sacrificing the delicate lighting that gives each film its emotional warmth.

Audio Quality

Like the visuals, the audio presentations focus on authenticity rather than spectacle. Beginners and 20th Century Women feature excellent 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mixes that provide clean dialogue, immersive music, and subtle environmental detail.

C’mon C’mon receives the premium treatment with a Dolby Atmos mix that further enhances its beautifully layered sound design. It’s not an aggressive Atmos experience, but it creates a wonderfully immersive atmosphere that complements the film’s intimate storytelling. Dialogue remains crystal clear throughout all three films, while the music and ambient sound effortlessly pull viewers into each emotional moment.

Is It Worth a Blind Purchase?
