Andrew Garfield is back in Silicon Valley, and this time, he’s the one holding the power. The actor plays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in Artificial. Luca Guadagnino‘s new drama is about the rise of AI and the shocking 2023 boardroom drama that saw Altman fired and rehired within five days.
The film had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5, and the early buzz has been loud. Much of that praise has gone to Garfield, who reportedly plays Altman as a soft-spoken and likable figure with a much darker side hiding underneath.
That’s a big shift from his role in The Social Network, where he played Eduardo Saverin, the friend who got pushed out of Facebook. Back then, Garfield missed out on an Oscar nomination. Now, with a juicy, morally murky role in hand, he has his best shot yet at finally taking home the gold.
Neon Pushes Andrew Garfield for Supporting Actor Oscar for Artificial
Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman in Artificial | Credits: NeonAccording to Variety, Neon will campaign Andrew Garfield in the Best Supporting Actor category, despite being the film’s biggest star. Meanwhile, Yura Borisov, who plays OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, will compete for Best Actor.
The decision makes sense once you look at the story. Artificial spans nearly two decades and is largely told through Sutskever’s eyes, with Sam Altman entering his life years into the film. That makes Borisov the true lead, while Garfield’s Altman is the force pushing everything around him.
It’s also a smart move strategically. The Best Actor race is already packed this year, while the supporting category gives Garfield a cleaner path. He is already a two-time Best Actor nominee for Hacksaw Ridge and Tick, Tick… Boom!, but he has never won.
Garfield won’t be alone. Mark Rylance, who plays AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, will also compete for Best Supporting Actor, while Monica Barbaro will campaign for Best Supporting Actress as former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati.
Neon also plans to push the film for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay for Simon Rich, and every major craft category. Artificial hits select U.S. theaters on December 25, 2026, before expanding in January 2027.
Andrew Garfield’s Villainous Portrayal Increases His Oscar Chances
Andrew Garfield in a still from Artificial | Credits: NeonAndrew Garfield has built a career playing good-hearted characters, from Peter Parker to the war hero Desmond Doss. That’s exactly why his Sam Altman is turning heads. Early reactions describe a man who seems warm, curious, and genuinely interested in the people around him, but slowly reveals a colder and more calculating side as the film goes on.
Oscar voters love that kind of slow-burn villain. The Best Supporting Actor category has a long history of rewarding actors who play memorable bad guys. Heath Ledger won for The Dark Knight, Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds, and J.K. Simmons for his terrifying music teacher in Whiplash.
The real-life angle helps too, as Altman is still one of the most talked-about figures in tech, and the film’s journey to the screen has already made headlines. Amazon MGM dropped the movie in June, months after its parent company invested $50 billion in OpenAI. Neon then picked it up.
Neon also has a proven awards track record, having won Best Picture with Parasite and Anora. With strong buzz and a powerful studio behind him, Garfield’s long wait for an Oscar could finally be coming to an end.
