AMC+’s Brutal 8-Part ‘Penny Dreadful’ Replacement Thriller Officially Just 1 Week Away

If you are a fan of Penny Dreadful, then AMC is gearing up for a new supernatural thriller that you must add to your watchlist. Directed by David Frazee (The Man in the High Castle) and Rachel Talalay (Doctor Who), YAGA is set to premiere on AMC+ on October 23, 2026. It is a Crave Original eight-episode supernatural mystery thriller series that was acquired by AMC+ and features Heated Rivalry star Hudson Williams in one of the main roles.

Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid, and Clark Backo take on the other main characters in this supernatural miniseries, which is already drawing comparisons to AMC’s 2014 hit series Penny Dreadful.

According to AMC’s official site, YAGA reimagines the myth of Baba Yaga. Set in a small coastal town, the story follows Rapp (Noah Reid), a private investigator who teams up with local detective Carson (Clark Backo) to investigate the disappearance of Henry Park (Hudson Williams), a young heir. After questioning a mysterious professor named Katherine (Carrie-Anne Moss), the duo uncovers dark secrets linked to the disappearance. YAGA is a psychological descent into ancient witchcraft, power, and seduction.

Creator Kat Sandler has revealed that there’s a lot of thought and effort that were put into Katherine’s character. She noted (via The Hollywood Reporter) that she wanted to create a morally complicated woman “whose badness we could enjoy along with her.” Sandler said of Katherine, “She’s a really complicated woman, and that’s my favorite kind of female character to get to write.”

How YAGA Carries Forward AMC’s Legacy of Supernatural Thrillers

AMC has maintained a long relationship with supernatural thrillers through series like Penny Dreadful, Mayfair Witches, Interview with the Vampire, and NOS4A2. YAGA extends that legacy, drawing on Slavic folklore to explore a contemporary mystery steeped in ancient magic.

Penny Dreadful explored gothic horror, combining supernatural creatures, dark secrets, and Victorian-era storytelling. YAGA, the Crave Original series acquired by AMC+, offers a new spin on supernatural storytelling. So, if you still find yourself reminiscing about Penny Dreadful, you should add YAGA to your next watch.

YAGA is set to premiere on AMC+ on October 23, 2026. Let us know your thoughts in the comments after watching the trailer.
