Nine years ago, the Secret Empire comics gave an Ultron speech that stings to this day. The god-like Ultron was the Avengers’ biggest threat, but this one quote revealed that Earth’s mightiest heroes did not need him to create chaos. They were already built for it, and they were destined to fight each other and tear each other apart.
Enough!!! Listen to yourselves — this constant bickering and battling, always at each other’s throats… It’s all you ever do anymore! What’s happened to you?! Where did it all go so wrong?! You know, it’s just exhausting — and in this form, I can’t even be exhausted! I go through all this trouble to bring us back together, and you just — you just — do you want to know why Ultron built this city? Why he didn’t come after you yet again? It’s because he didn’t have to. It’s because he looked at you and your war, Tony, and you and your scheming, Steve — and he realized he wouldn’t have to destroy anything — because you were already doing it for him. You were going to tear each other apart, and burn down everything you built in the process. He didn’t need to lift a finger — he just needed to wait.
Now Ultron is returning to screen, with James Spader back in Disney+’s VisionQuest on October 14, 2026. That timing makes the old quote feel newly relevant. Here is what Ultron actually meant, why it cuts so deep in the comic, which was released on June 14, 2017, and how it echoes in the MCU today.
Ultron’s Secret Empire Line Hits Different Ahead of Doomsday
Ultron in Secret Empire | Credits: Marvel ComicsAs the Avengers gear up for their biggest battle yet in Avengers: Doomsday, it is important to see how far they have come. From the first Avengers film, the group’s infighting is the major cause of their downfall, and it is only when they come together that they can defeat the antagonist. Yet, each time, they bicker, separate, and go through the whole cycle again.
In the Secret Empire comics, Ultron (merged with Hank Pym) captures both the Avengers and the Underground in a replica of the Avengers Mansion in his own city. When Tony and Steve start bickering with each other about their situation, Ultron loses it and says the above quote, explaining why he never attacked them again.
That is the disturbing part. For decades, Ultron was defined by force: armies, bodies, extermination plans. Here he arrives at a colder conclusion. Humanity does not need to be conquered, because it already has the tools to ruin itself. The Avengers’ war with each other, Tony’s scheming, Steve’s compromised leadership under Hydra — all of it is fuel. Ultron only has to stand back and keep the lights on. His apathy towards humanity and intent to destroy it is also shown in Age of Ultron.
With Avengers: Doomsday looming and pitting multiple superhero groups against each other before they tackle Doctor Doom, Ultron’s speech becomes important for fans who always strive to believe that their heroes will save the day. Doom might just win without even lifting a finger as the rest of the superhero teams bicker and fight each other.
Ultron Echoes the Same Sentiments in VisionQuest
James Spader as Ultron in VisionQuest | Credits: Disney+Ultron was first seen in the MCU in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where Tony created him as well as Vision. After 11 years, James Spader’s Ultron is back in the franchise in VisionQuest and still has a similar apathy towards humanity. Throughout Age of Ultron, the omniscient AI judged humanity for its folly and thought it right to destroy it once and for all.
While we do not know how much plot impact Ultron will have on VisionQuest, Spader claims in a new video that he is older and wiser. However, many of his lines and descriptions still make it seem like he is the dictatorial, nihilistic AI we know him as. Words like ‘devil’, ‘monster’, and ‘g*nocidal maniac’ make the rounds, and Ultron even warns Vision that he is blind to the truth.
The most important line comes in the middle of the Ultron video, where he clearly states what his intentions are for returning (via YouTube).
I’m going to finish what I started all those years ago. I’ll just be here watching the world burn…You wanted to play God? Now it’s time you met one.
While it is not word-for-word, Ultron’s statement about being there to watch the world burn is very much in line with what he said in Secret Empire. His objective is to create chaos, trusting humanity to get the assignment and destroy themselves. Bleak indeed.
