7 Years Later, Colin Farrell’s Best Quote in The Gentlemen Is Still Criminally Underrated

Seven years after the movie was released, Colin Farrell’s Coach in The Gentlemen remains one of the film’s most memorable characters. The movie has the usual Guy Ritchie trappings. For instance, there are larger-than-life criminals and otherwise interesting characters. But Coach stands out and is pretty unique. He combines physical intimidation with something more valuable: intelligence. And Farrell does great justice to the character. This is perfectly captured in one of the movie’s best scenes, wherein he teaches a group of young men a lesson in the difference between violence and real power. The quote goes:

Preceding these lines, Coach confronts the young men after witnessing their behaviour. The situation escalates when they attack him — or try to, anyway. Coach effortlessly puts them in their place and then utters those lines.

The hot-blooded young men believe that it is possible to dominate someone through physical aggression, but Coach knows that control over oneself and the situation lies in understanding things and using the brain, not brawn. Farrell delivers the line in such a way that it sounds funny, entertaining, and also a little cathartic. But it is easy to find that there is some serious wisdom in the words.

Also, it is worth saying something about the “gray.” Coach actually means that the battlefield is one’s mind. Therefore, the ones who can adapt to the situation and keep cool under pressure will have an edge over others. 

The quote is compatible with the larger world-building in the movie. The Gentlemen treats power as, mainly, a game of perception. The dude who looks the most dangerous may not be so. Someone more humble-looking may really be the person in control. In this world, the real advantage is to whoever can grasp the situation instead of going guns blazing. This was the difference between Robert De Niro’s James Conway and Joe Pesci’s Tommy DeVito in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, one of the best gangster movies of the 20th century. While Conway was strategic, DeVito was reckless.

The Gentlemen got a 75% Tomatometer score and grossed $115 million on a budget of $22 million as per Box Office Mojo. The figures are as of September 1, 2026.

The Gentlemen Spinoff Expands the Power Game in Season 2

That notion of strategic power is carried forward in Netflix’s The Gentlemen spinoff, which returns with Season 2 later this week. Eddie (Theo James) and Susie (Kaya Scodelario) are broadening their criminal enterprise. As seen in the trailer, they venture into Italy and come up against new foes, including crime boss Marco Moretti (Sergio Castellitto) and fixer Cico Maldini (Michele Morrone).
