The Call of Duty franchise has delivered some of the most challenging missions in first-person shooter history, testing players with relentless enemy attacks and unforgiving objectives. From the brutal urban warfare of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare to the desperate battles of Call of Duty: World at War, several missions have become notorious for their difficulty, and we have ranked the 7 hardest of them.
7 Clean House – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
Clean House | Credit: ActivisionClean House takes a different approach to difficulty by demanding precision rather than overwhelming firepower. Set inside a London townhouse, the mission follows Captain Price and his team as they clear rooms filled with armed enemies.
Players must identify targets quickly and react to enemies hiding behind doors or around corners while avoiding shooting innocent occupants. On greater difficulties, even a moment of hesitation can result in failure.
6 Wetwork – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) Spec Ops
Wetwork | Credit: ActivisionWetwork challenges players to infiltrate a Russian oil rig and rescue hostages while navigating heavily guarded corridors. As a Spec Ops mission, it becomes especially demanding when played alone or when attempting to achieve a high rating.
Enemies can overwhelm players in confined spaces, while mistakes during hostage encounters can make the whole mission go south. The combination of stealth and limited opportunities to recover makes Wetwork one of the more demanding early Spec Ops challenges in Modern Warfare 2.
5 Vorkuta – Call of Duty: Black Ops
Vorkuta | Credit: ActivisionVorkuta in Call of Duty: Black Ops places players in the middle of a prison uprising as Alex Mason and Viktor Reznov attempt to escape a Soviet labor camp. Unlike missions built around careful shooting, this sequence combines combat with scripted action and time-sensitive objectives.
The mission’s intensity comes from its constant momentum. Players must keep moving through crowded encounters while dealing with armed guards and navigating several distinct action sequences. Although its difficulty is less dependent on precision than some other entries on this list, its relentless pace makes it a memorable challenge.
4 Heart of the Reich – Call of Duty: World at War
Heart of the Reich | Credit: ActivisionHeart of the Reich is one of the most punishing missions in Call of Duty: World at War, particularly on Veteran difficulty. Set during the Soviet assault on Berlin, it requires players to fight through heavily defended streets before advancing toward the Reichstag.
The main obstacle is the sheer volume of enemy fire. Grenades frequently land near the player, and with German soldiers defending their entrenched positions, advancing without cover can lead to repeated deaths.
3 Pavlov’s House – Call of Duty (2003)
Pavlov’s House | Credit: ActivisionPavlov’s House recreates the brutal urban fighting associated with the Battle of Stalingrad. Players must help Soviet forces defend a strategically important building against waves of German attackers.
The mission demands careful ammunition management and constant awareness of enemy positions. German troops attack from multiple directions, and players can quickly become overwhelmed if they fail to defend the building’s vulnerable approaches.
2 One Shot, One Kill – Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
One Shot, One Kill | Credit: ActivisionOne Shot, One Kill is infamous for its difficult final sequence, especially on Veteran difficulty. Playing as a young Lieutenant Price, under the command of Captain MacMillan, players must assassinate arms dealer Imran Zakhaev during a flashback mission set in Pripyat, then protect the wounded MacMillan after the shot draws enemy attention.
The mission becomes particularly challenging when players must defend their position against waves of enemies while waiting for extraction. Carrying MacMillan also limits mobility toward the escape, making the final dash toward the helicopter especially stressful.
1 Mile High Club – Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Mile High Club | Credit: ActivisionTaking the top spot is Mile High Club, the short but notoriously difficult epilogue of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Players must storm a hijacked airplane, eliminate the terrorists, and rescue a hostage before the aircraft reaches the end of its flight path.
The mission’s strict time limit leaves little room for any kind of hesitation. Enemies occupy narrow corridors, and incoming fire can end an attempt almost instantly. The final hostage rescue adds another precision-based challenge, requiring players to react correctly during a slow-motion sequence.
