From directly addressing the audience to visuals of real-life locations, the trend of anime breaking the fourth wall is not new, it dates back decades, with some of the most iconic titles. Not only do these titles offer a refreshing outlook and occasional surprises, but they also integrate narrative with the real world.
With that being said, let’s address what we’re here for. Here are some of the anime titles that broke the fourth wall in iconic ways, ranked by the impact they made and the quality of the event.
5 Tamaki Reminding His Position in Ouran High School Host Club

Throughout the series, Tamaki repeatedly claims that he is the main character, and others are just supporting roles.
To top it off, he also occasionally said he is in a romantic comedy series, even asking Mori if he’s upset he hasn’t been the main focus of an episode yet. Characters from Kyoya to even Haruhi have been known to comment on the story, occasionally even apologizing for Tamaki’s behavior, creating a creative interaction with the viewers.
4 Excel Saga Went as Far as to Not Even Spare the Creator

Staff/Prime VideoThe Excel Saga anime is widely known for constantly breaking the fourth wall, not just in a single episode, but multiple times in each episode. Even Excel, one of the main characters, constantly creates parodic moments to the point where they don’t even spare the creator of the series, Koshi Rikudo.
One of the funniest moments was in Episode 14, when the characters literally started begging the creator for approval to add new ones. And to top that, there were multiple parodies placed in the series, the most iconic being the Sailor Moon parody.
3 Fruits Basket Broke the Fourth Wall to Ensure Its Viewers’ Safety
A still from the Fruits Basket anime | Credits: TMSFruits Basket is an overall fun series with an interactive narrative that blends in with beautiful animation. But the anime also has its moments for breaking the Fourth wall, especially in season 1’s episode 9. In the episode, Hatsuharu trips Kyo to stop and talk to him.
However, he also addresses us directly and cautions us just how dangerous what he did was, and not everyone’s skull is as thick as Kyo’s. While this was a subtle gesture, the manga has the same fourth-wall-breaking moment that is adapted into the anime, which makes it more impactful.
2 Gintama’s Constant Commentary With Its Audience
A still from the Gintama anime | Credits: SunriseIt should be obvious that Gintama makes it to a list of parodies and breaking the fourth wall – the anime is literally known as the “king of parodies”. While addressing the audience for a comedic scene or to answer fan questions has always been a trend in the series, one particular moment is still iconic.
In one scene from Episode 182, Otae is so upset that said gorilla did better than her in a popularity poll that she kills the creator, breaking the fourth wall. This leads to a drop in the animation quality until the creator gets a robotic replacement.
1 Fire Force Breaks the Fourth Wall With Shinra’s Ascendance
Yes, you are seeing it correctly, and these are not actual images; these are from the Fire Force anime’s season 3 episode 12. The series broke the fourth wall with the Great Cataclysm in the past, as no one expected it to.
While a narration that Tokyo is an active part of the storyline is something else, the series actually showed it. This was one of the hardest-hitting moments in anime in recent years, featuring visuals of real-life places in Japan, specifically Tokyo.
