5 Main Takeaways From The Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Previews

2 hours ago 3

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is going to be an epic finale. Square Enix’s conclusion to the remake trilogy follows the more linear structure of Remake and the big open world of Rebirth, and seemingly takes it even further. We’re starting to see publications and content creators share their hands-on previews from Gamescom 2026, and it gives us a good idea of exactly what to expect.

From what we know, the hands-on preview lasted 45 to 60 minutes, and that limited time was enough to reveal several important changes to the world, combat, customization, and the sheer amount of content awaiting us. Here are five of the biggest takeaways from the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation previews.

1 The Highwind Completely Changes Exploration in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation

First, let’s talk about exploration, where the biggest difference is undoubtedly the Highwind. In FF7 Revelation, we can pilot the iconic airship across a unified world map with regions from the previous games and new areas such as Wutai and Mideel.

And instead of landing the ship at certain places, we’ll be able to jump from the Highwind and parachute toward almost any location in the world. This will give us a seamless transition between aerial travel and ground exploration whenever we spot an interesting location down below.

For ground exploration, Piko, our Chocobo, is getting multiple movement abilities. We’re also getting new tools such as a grappling hook for more ways to reach hidden areas.

We can expect the world to be considerably less restrictive than Rebirth’s. However, its enormous size also raises concerns about whether all that freedom will remain engaging throughout the adventure.

2 Cid and Vincent Are Standout Additions to the Playable Roster

Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine are finally playable in Revelation, and they both play very differently.

Cid is going to be your traditional Dragoon archetype. He has great reach with his spear, and his aerial attacks allow him to launch enemies and follow them into the air.

Vincent is arguably even more unconventional. He has fast ranged attacks with his guns, and he can instantly transform into the Galian Beast, which gives him much more serious melee attacks.

The returning characters are largely similar, but the new FITS systems give the entire roster a ton of new options.

3 The FITS is a Whole New Layer of Character Customization

The Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear, or FITS, system gives every character access to four specialized roles: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner.

These aren’t your typical class characters. Instead, they add to each character’s existing abilities with new skills and customization options. Barret, for example, can use the Knight role to become a more defensive frontline fighter without losing his trademark gun-arm abilities.

This will give you a lot more options when building your party, especially if you want certain characters together without sacrificing important roles. There are also a ton of new Materia for more customization, with some armor pieces offering three linked Materia slots rather than the usual two.

4 There’s an Almost Overwhelming Amount to Do

The sheer quantity of optional content may ultimately be Revelation‘s greatest strength and its biggest concern. According to the previews, there are side quests, monster hunts, wildlife photography, Chocobo activities, Combat Assignments, Cetran Shrines, Queen’s Blood, minigames, and more regional activities in the world.

The Gold Saucer is also receiving additional activities, and even optional content such as Knights of the Round will reportedly receive dedicated storylines.

What we’re worried about is whether this will replicate Rebirth‘s feeling of too much. The good news is that we won’t apparently be permanently locked out of side content for progressing through the story. This should make it easier to explore at a comfortable pace.

5 Square Enix Is Going All-In on the Finale

The final takeaway is that Revelation won’t just be a finale for this remake trilogy. It will surpass its predecessors in virtually every direction.

Wutai has become a major location, returning areas have been integrated into the same world, and the Highwind is a completely new way to experience the world. We have tons of new combat content with Cid, Vincent, and FITS, and the Materia system is also becoming even bigger.

We still have major questions regarding the story, especially after Rebirth‘s ending, but the early hands-on impressions suggest that this finale certainly has extraordinary ambition. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027, and if these previews are any indication, players may need a considerable amount of time to see everything it has to offer.
