Isekai anime has completely taken over the recent anime industry; however, its lesser-known counterpart, reverse isekai, also offers some refreshing twists to this traditional formula. The Daemons of the Shadow Realm anime in the recent Spring 2026 anime lineup brought these concepts once again with a relatively darker theme.

Based on the manga by Fullmetal Alchemist creator Hiromu Arakawa, the anime adaptation is now airing as an anime by Bones Film and blends folklore, mystery, and grounded character drama. However, beyond the recent Daemons of the Shadow Realm anime, there are other great reverse isekai anime series with some absurdly funny, quietly emotional, or surprisingly sharp themes, each of them delivering a similar concept in very different ways. Personally, we think this series works because it fully commits to its joke. It is not a series that is trying to be deep, and that is exactly why it succeeds. The humor is consistent, the characters are unique and ultimately, it is a series that you can binge-watch without overthinking it a lot.

4 Re:CREATORS – When Fictional Worlds Break Into Reality

Re:Creators is an ambitious entry in the reverse isekai genre. Instead of just one world colliding with another, it features multiple fictional characters being brought into the real world and explores what that actually means – for both the characters and their creators.

However, this show may feel more difficult to understand for some viewers to get into than your average reverse isekai – the pacing is a bit heavy and the dialogue tends to rely a lot on exposition. Still, we do respect what Re:Creators is trying to accomplish here – it is one of the smartest takes on the genre, even if it occasionally sacrifices entertainment for introducing ideas.

3 Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid – Dragons, Comedy, and Found Family

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is among the most charming titles in this list. Dragons integrating into our society alone are sufficient to provide unlimited comedic moments – however, the show also explores themes related to relationships and belonging.

While some of the fan service in the show works very well, some does not. Still, the story’s emotional core makes it all worthwhile. This is one of those anime shows that seem very light on the surface but has surprising depth once you spend time with the characters.

2 Hinamatsuri – Absurd Humor Meets Unexpected Emotion

While Hinamatsuri might seem like a pure comedic series, it is so much more than that. A psychic girl suddenly appearing in a yakuza’s life immediately creates hilarious moments, yet the series slowly builds genuine emotional weight as well.

The thing that really stands out about Hinamatsuri is its ability to flawlessly balance so many tones. It can be completely absurd one minute and shockingly heartwarming the next. We believe that the character-driven narrative of this series is the best among most of the anime series in this genre, which is why it ranks so high.

1 The Devil Is a Part-Timer! – The Ultimate Reverse Isekai Classic

The Devil Is a Part-Timer! comes on top as the best reverse isekai. The series starts with a simple premise, like a demon lord working a part-time job in modern Tokyo, but it nicely blends comedy, world-building, and character growth. Thus, it is often considered one of the most popular entries in this genre.

However, personally, we feel that only the first season truly captured the full magic. Later sequels do not hit the same. Even so, if you are looking for the genre’s most entertaining title, nothing in this list really beats this one.

Now, with Daemons of the Shadow Realm releasing this Spring 2026, it is clear the “fantasy meets reality” formula still works when backed by strong writing and character focus.
