5 Best New Horror Movies Releasing in October, Ranked by Hype

October is the one month of the year when horror movies truly own the calendar, and 2026 is no exception. With Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil still ruling the box office, a fresh wave of scary movies is ready to take over theaters and streaming screens before Halloween.

This year’s lineup has a bit of everything, from a DC supervillain origin story and a mythical Amazonian serpent to killer spiders and a post-apocalyptic final girl. Not every release made the cut, though.

Breeder and Eli Roth-backed slasher Stiletto are both worth keeping an eye on, but they haven’t built the same buzz yet. Here are the five most hyped horror movies arriving this October, ranked by how excited fans are to see them.

5 Hallowarrior Brings Post-Apocalyptic Halloween Horror

Release Date: October 16, 2026

In Hallowarrior, the world has already ended, but Halloween hasn’t. Milly Shapiro, who left audiences shaken as Charlie in Hereditary, plays Pumpkin, the last girl alive after a deadly plague wipes out humanity. Her lonely holiday traditions are interrupted when a violent gang of raiders, led by Shannyn Sossamon’s Thalia, shows up at her door.

Armed with candy, weapons, and a lot of attitude, Pumpkin has to fight to survive the night. The film earned strong reviews after premiering at Tribeca, with critics praising its cozy fall vibes and crowd-pleasing kills. So why is it fifth? It’s skipping theaters and heading straight to Shudder, which keeps it off the radar for many casual viewers.

4 Crawlers Is Every Arachnophobe’s Worst Nightmare

Release Date: October 16, 2026

If spiders make your skin crawl, you might want to sit this one out. In Crawlers, a venomous spider infestation forces the police to seal off an entire apartment building. Nobody can get in or out, and the spiders are multiplying fast.

Matilda Lutz, whom horror fans will remember from the brutal revenge thriller Revenge, stars as Serena, the building manager who knows the place better than anyone but is also terrified of spiders. Director Ángel Gómez Hernández keeps things tight with an 81-minute runtime, and the gnarly red band trailer has already made plenty of viewers squirm.

It edges out Hallowarrior thanks to its theatrical release, but its simple creature-feature premise doesn’t carry the same excitement as the top three.

3 Beware Boiúna Brings Jaws-Style Terror to the Amazon

Release Date: October 2, 2026

Beware Boiúna takes a legend from Amazonian folklore and turns it into a full-blown monster movie. When a medical mission travels deep into the rainforest, it accidentally wakes Boiúna, a massive, ancient serpent that sees the river as her territory.

Soon, the team is fighting for their lives in a jungle where nature makes all the rules. Lionsgate is pitching it as a mix of Jaws and Anaconda, and that alone is enough to get creature-feature fans excited.

The film stars Logan Marshall-Green and Happy Death Day‘s Jessica Rothe, with Mike P. Nelson of the Wrong Turn reboot directing. As the widest release among the smaller titles, it lands at third, but it still lacks the star power of the top two.

2 Clayface Takes DC Into Gruesome Body Horror Territory

DC Studios is going somewhere it has never gone before with Clayface, an R-rated body horror movie. Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen, a rising Hollywood actor whose face is ruined. Desperate, he turns to a scientist, played by Naomi Ackie, for help.

However, her treatment slowly turns his body into living clay, and things only get uglier from there. There’s a lot of talent behind this one. Horror favorite Mike Flanagan wrote the script, Speak No Evil director James Watkins is at the helm, and James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Matt Reeves are producing.

It’s also a rare superhero-adjacent film that has horror fans and comic book fans equally curious. The only reason it isn’t first is that some fans are still unsure how DC’s darker experiment will pay off.

1 Other Mommy Is Halloween’s Best Scary Bet

Release Date: October 9, 2026

No October horror movie has people talking quite like Other Mommy. Based on Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House, the film follows Arabella Olivia Clark’s Bela, a young girl who is visited every night by something that crawls out of her closet.

It looks almost exactly like her mother, played by Jessica Chastain, and it keeps asking, “Can I go inside your heart?”. The film comes from Rob Savage, the director of Host and The Boogeyman, with horror giant James Wan producing through Blumhouse and Atomic Monster.

Its creepy trailer went viral after playing before The Odyssey in theaters, leaving audiences genuinely unsettled. With an Oscar winner leading the cast and one of horror’s biggest producers behind it, Other Mommy easily takes the top spot.
