In the anime world, some voices don’t just introduce a show; they make it feel like a huge event. One such voice is Peter Cullen, who is famous for his role as Optimus Prime.
Cullen’s deep voice was a crucial part of Toonami’s brand during its early days. Through dramatic promos for Dragon Ball Z and Mobile Suit Gundam, Cullen helped give these anime a bigger and more exciting feel for viewers in the United States.
Peter Cullen Made Dragon Ball Z and Gundam Feel Bigger
Toonami became one of the main ways through which American viewers discovered anime during the late 1990s and early 2000s. While shows like Dragon Ball Z and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing were already popular, Toonami’s promos made them feel even more special.
A lot of those promos were narrated by Peter Cullen and his characteristic deep voice. His narration gave the shows a serious and dramatic tone that was very different from the usual Saturday morning cartoon experience.
This worked especially well for Dragon Ball Z. The series was already filled with huge battles, powerful transformations, and characters who could decide the fate of the world. The dramatic narration of Peter Cullen thus elevated the simple TV promo to the level of a movie preview.
At the same time, Peter Cullen was responsible for promoting Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. The iconic promo originally aired on Toonami in March 2000 and was featured again as part of Toonami’s 25th-anniversary celebration, quickly gaining popularity as one of the major hits of the block. Its story about war, politics, giant mobile suits, and young pilots was very different from the lighter cartoons many American children were used to watching.
Cullen’s voice helped sell that difference. His narration made Gundam Wing sound serious, dangerous, and worth watching. He was not a character in either anime, but his voice became part of how many American fans first experienced them.
Peter Cullen’s Transformers Legacy Will Never Be Forgotten
Of course, most fans globally would still remember Cullen for his voice as Optimus Prime. He originally started voicing the Autobot leader in the animated Transformers series before continuing with his iconic voice role over several decades.

The deep, resonant voice brought power to the character and gave him authority, while Cullen’s soft side helped give Optimus the humanity that made him so endearing to audiences everywhere. Apart from voicing Optimus in Transformers, Cullen also lent his voice to Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh and several other memorable characters.
Sadly, Cullen died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on August 26, 2026, at the age of 85 (via TMZ). His family confirmed that he was surrounded by loved ones. His cause of death has not been publicly revealed yet. Tributes poured in from fans and fellow creators on social media as the world remembered Peter Cullen and his legendary voice.
