26 Years Later, Primal Fear Director’s 118-Minute Jim Caviezel Sci-fi Hit Takes Over Streaming

Almost three decades after its release, the Jim Caviezel starrer Frequency is trending again on streaming. The sci-fi thriller has reportedly faced a resurgence, with FlixPatrol revealing that the film is in the top 10 most-streamed movies on Tubi. The film was released in 2000 and was directed by Gregory Hoblit.

While Hoblit is best known for directing Edward Norton’s breakout film Primal Fear, which was also a mind-bending psychological thriller with a killer twist, Frequency is arguably a more well-conceived movie and has plenty of interesting themes it explores. The time-bending thriller has an enduring legacy.

Fans Have Revived The Love for Jim Caviezel’s Frequency on Tubi

As of August 26, 2026, Jim Caviezel’s Frequency is in the number four spot on Tubi, which has a large collection of TV shows and movies. It ranks behind T.I.M., Spanglish, and Give Me Back My Baby, and ranks higher than the documentary Michael Jackson: Finding Neverland. For a movie that was released 26 years ago, it is a notable resurgence.

Frequency is a sci-fi thriller that spans decades, with Jim Caviezel’s John Sullivan, an NYPD detective, communicating with his dead father, Frank, three decades earlier. An atmospheric event leads the two to talk to each other through radio, and John tries to change history, including preventing the death of his father.

The film takes a time-travel plot and takes it to the next level, with several paradoxes being explored. The most prominent theme explored is the Grandfather Paradox, which posits a theory that it would be impossible for someone to go back in time and kill their grandfather without changing history. It also explores the Butterfly Effect.

In Frequency, Caviezel’s John tries to control history and change his present. He saves his father from certain death by revealing hindsight information to him, and then later saves not only his mother, but a host of people who are victims of a serial killer. Frequency’s Cult-like Legacy Continued on TV and in Parodies

While the film was a decent success at the box office, earning $68.1 million (via Box Office Mojo, as of August 26, 2026), its enduring legacy is through the various references it has garnered and a TV adaptation. In 2016, The CW ordered a season of Frequency, with Jim Caviezel’s John being gender-swapped to Raimy Sullivan, who is able to communicate with her deceased dad.

Peyton List and Riley Smith starred in the series, which had former Supernatural showrunner Jeremy Carver calling the shots. While it received positive responses, with a Popcornmeter score of 85% (as of August 26, 2026), the show was canceled after one season. It got an epilogue to close off the plot of the series, which feels like a rarity these days, and proves the care they had for fans.

The film was also referenced in the sitcom Reno 911, where one of the fire victims urges the team to save their novel, which shares the plot of Frequency. The ham radio used in the film was appreciated. Frank’s call sign, W2QYV, is a real call sign. The American Radio Relay League was a technical consultant for the movie.
