21 Years Later, Sandra Bullock Still Won’t Return for Her Only Sequel With Dolly Parton

Sandra Bullock remains completely firm on closing the book on one of her most recognizable comedic franchises. Even 21 years after the release of Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, the Oscar-winning actress has made it clear she will not return for a third installment, frankly declaring, “God no! No, no.” In an interview with Metro UK in 2022, she stated that one movie was good enough and added:

Two shouldn’t have been done but I’m glad that it did because of Regina, who I just freaking adore. That one should have remained a one-off.

The 2005 sequel famously marked Bullock’s only cinematic collaboration with late entertainment icon Dolly Parton, who delivered an unforgettable Las Vegas cameo where Gracie Hart tackles her to the floor.

Dolly Parton passed away on August 25, 2026, at age 80, at her home in Nashville, with her family saying she died peacefully. Her nephew Bryan Seaver announced the news on her behalf. Tributes poured in from figures across music and entertainment, though as of this writing no public statement from Bullock specifically has been reported.

Despite the enduring fan love for the character and her memorable on-screen moment with Parton, Bullock has openly distanced herself from the idea of a trilogy, expressing deep reservations about why the follow-up film was ever greenlit in the first place.

Looking back at her Hollywood track record, Bullock has rarely minced words about follow-up films, candidly stating in past interviews that the Miss Congeniality sequel “shouldn’t have been done.”

While the original 2000 smash hit seamlessly balanced slapstick humor, undercover espionage, and genuine female empowerment, the sequel struggled to recapture that original box-office magic. During a retrospective with People, Bullock confessed that revisiting the character felt unnecessary, suggesting that Gracie Hart’s journey had already reached its natural conclusion during her first beauty pageant undercover mission.

That said, the 2005 sequel was not without its bright spots, most notably the chaotic Las Vegas scene where Gracie tackles Dolly Parton to protect her from an apparent threat. Reflecting on working with the late country icon, Bullock praised Parton for being a total sport on set, and shared (Via BBC):

It was extraordinary to straddle Dolly Parton. I was literally lying on top of her, and I didn’t feel comfortable with this but she looked at me and said: “We’re going to put the Madonna-Britney kiss to shame!” And I thought “Wow, you rock. You just rock!”. Really, she was everything you’d want her to be and more.

Yet even the charm of late Parton and co-star Regina King wasn’t enough to convince Bullock that the franchise needed more chapters. Instead, the actress noted that any future iteration would work far better as a prequel with a younger cast rather than forcing an older Gracie Hart back into field action.

On a lighter note, Bullock did mark “Miss Congeniality Day” (April 25) with fans on Instagram in April 2026, referencing the film’s famous “perfect date” line and sharing a playful photo as a sign she still embraces the original film’s legacy even while holding firm against a third installment.
