Killua’s “You Are Light” Quote Hits Different After 13 Years

Killua’s “you are light” confession comes during the Chimera Ant arc, in the events covered by Episode 85, “Light × And × Darkness.” The anime episode first aired in Japan on June 23, 2013, and adapted parts of Chapters 198 and 199 of Yoshihiro Togashi‘s manga.

The line sounds like a simple compliment at first. Gon is the “light,” while Killua sees himself as someone who belongs to the “dark.” But the meaning goes much deeper. Here’s the full quote –

Gon in this story is often shown as being honest, courageous, and full of energy. He allows his feelings to guide him without being ashamed. Killua is entirely the opposite of Gon. He grew up in the Zoldyck family, where killing was part of his life from a young age. He was trained to be an assassin and spent years believing that violence was simply who he was.

Because of this, Killua often struggles to see himself as a good person. Gon becomes the opposite of everything Killua thinks he is. That is why the last part of the quote hurts the most. Killua does not ask whether he can help Gon. Instead of asking if he can be of any help to Gon, he asks if he can be there beside him.

The timing makes the scene even more powerful. Prior to this, Gon and Killua fight Neferpitou, a fighter far superior to their abilities. Kite loses his arm, Gon gets out of control, and Killua has to knock Gon out to stop him from throwing his life away.

Killua then carries Gon safely while knowing that Kite has been left behind. Even though stopping Gon was the right choice, Killua blames himself for what happened. That guilt follows him through the arc.

Hunter x Hunter: The Chimera Ant Arc Changed Killua and Gon Forever

The Chimera Ant Arc also turns their usual roles upside down. Killua, who was raised to kill, becomes the one trying to protect Gon from himself. Gon, who usually brings hope and energy to their adventures, becomes consumed by anger and grief. Their friendship survives, but neither character comes out of the Chimera Ant arc unchanged.

For Killua, the arc proves that caring about Gon also means knowing when to protect him, even when Gon does not want to be protected. For Gon, it exposes how dangerous his determination can become when he allows his emotions to take control.
