The universe of Warhammer 40K is widely known as one of the darkest, bleakest, and most strife-ridden fictional settings in modern media. But underneath all that grimdarkness, there is an element of horror and fear that is much more unexplored than the other sub-genres of fiction within its vastness.
Therefore, with the development of Amazon’s Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe underway, here are ten chilling and unsolved mysteries from the setting that Henry Cavill should build upon, or at least explore, in the upcoming franchise.

The Tyrant Star is a cosmic anomaly observed predominantly in the Calixis Sector. This anomaly is deeply unsettling and frightening, as there is almost no understanding of its nature or appearance in places across the Imperial Sector, aside from the fact that its arrival follows strife and unrest.
Described as a black dwarf star, similar to the Eclipse from Kentaro Miura’s Berserk, whenever a human planet witnesses the Tyrant Star in its sky, several chaotic events, ranging from natural calamities to civil unrest and anarchy, ensue, leading to devastation. Moreover, it’s rumored that the Inquisition claims it’s part of an ancient prophecy that foretells the Tyrant Star as the herald of a cataclysm that will end all of humanity.
2 The Deep Warp: The Immaterium’s Darkest Depths

This place is said to be similar to the bottom half of the Mariana Trench, where indescribable energies and entities form an unfathomable ecosystem so horrific and utterly mind-shattering that even the Gods of Chaos don’t dare venture into it. And to this day, no soul has either been in the Deep Warp or lived to tell the tale
3 The Dark Cells: Horrors Beyond Comprehension
Cover page of The Vaults of Terra: The Dark City | Credits: Warhammer 40,000 and Games WorkshopUnderneath the Imperial Palace are said to be secret vaults that house the Dark Cells. These cells are part of a supposed prison complex that is said to house some of the worst, most horrific, and inexplicable objects and entities that are too dangerous to be left free, but too valuable to be destroyed, or rather, cannot be destroyed.
While there isn’t concrete information about these Dark Cells, it’s said to contain horrifying and powerful Xenos species, Chaos Daemons, and even arcane entities capable of causing widespread devastation. Thus, to safeguard this place, and the entire specialized battalion of Custodes Guards, called the Shadowkeepers, is said to be stationed here at all times, which gives us a glimpse of just how utterly terrifying the things within this place are.
4 The Hadex Anomaly: The Sentient Cancer of Realspace
Cover page of Ahriman: Undying | Credits: Warhammer 40,000 and Games WorkshopIf you are a fan of cosmic horror, then you will love the cosmic phenomenon known as The Hadex Anomaly, which is described as a sentient cancer that feeds on the realm of realspace and space-time continuum as a whole. While it may look like a rift in realspace, similar to the Eye of Terror, this anomaly within Jericho’s Reach is far more insidious and inexplicable than the Warp.
It is said that, similar to a beating heart, it feels like it’s taking a breath, where every single one can devour entire solar systems within its reach. Despite the Inquisition’s efforts to understand this phenomenon, they have been unsuccessful, which has led some to horrifyingly conclude that this may be a part of a metaphysical Eldritch abomination.
5 The Silent Ones: Necromunda’s Inhumans
Cover page of Necromunda: The Book of Desolation | Credits: Warhammer 40,000 and Games WorkshopWithin the Hive City of Necromunda, certain organizations called the Noble Houses run the entire city from their ivory towers. But even when most of these houses serve an industrial purpose, the House of Shadows is veiled in secrecy, which becomes even more unsettling when people dive deeper and realize that maybe, the members of this house are not humans or human mutants like the others.
Before it was littered with Hive Cities, the surface of Necromunda was filled with vast and deep oceans, where it’s believed that a race of powerful god-like Xenos called the Silent Ones lived. And today, when the surface is barren and the air poisonous, it’s said that the current members of the House of Shadows are the followers and/or hosts of these ancient Xenos, who are living among humanity.
6 The Halo Stars: The Inexplicable Cosmic Bodies
Cover page of Rogue Trader: Foresaken Bounty | Credits: Warhammer 40,000 and Games WorkshopThe Halo Stars are believed to be the oldest stars in the galaxy, but that’s not what’s fascinating about this region of space in the Segmentum Obscurus, as a lot of inexplicable and terrifying phenomena are what make it infamous.
To put into perspective, the Ghoul Stars, which are part of the Outer Ring of the galaxy, called the Halo Stars, are said to be infested with Lovecraftian horrors beyond human comprehension, and space anomalies that are worse than your worst nightmare.
Moreover, the Halo Stars have three more sectors like the Ghoul Stars within them, where certain death, or a fate even worse, awaits those who dare explore them. And to this day, nobody knows just how terrifying the Halo Stars truly are.
7 The Murder Room: Visceral Horror of Death
Cover page of Dark Heresy: Tattered Fate | Credits: Warhammer 40,000 and Games WorkshopIn the Dark Heresy: Disciples of the Dark Gods book, there’s a file report that talks of an arcane phenomenon called the Murder Room, said to be similar to the Backrooms, where someone is transported into an alternate dimension. But unlike an endless maze, this is said to be a single room that reeks of death, and its walls are drenched in blood, almost like they’re oozing from them.
Those who have witnessed the Murder Room and survived state that the place feels alive and hungry for more death and gore, where every murder that has ever taken place is preserved as screams and pleas for mercy, and is heard constantly. Thus, even if one survives this hellish place, they succumb to madness and lunacy.
8 The Processional of the Damned: The Cosmic Graveyard
Cover page of Rogue Trader: The Omnibus | Credits: Warhammer 40,000 and Games WorkshopLocated within the Koronus Expanse is a place known as the Accursed Demesne, the Processional of the Damned is a title given to a cosmic phenomenon that sees thousands of destroyed Voidships and Dead Worlds congregating into this one place.
This phenomenon is especially terrifying as the Dead Worlds and Voidships don’t belong to nearby systems or sectors, but travel several thousand light-years across the galaxy without any physical guidance to congregate in this one place. Thus, the mystery of whatever power and/or presence that is guiding these ghoul entities into Accursed Demesne is deeply terrifying.
9 The Fornax Aleph Mystery: A Whole Hive World, Vanished
Cover page of The Watcher in the Rain | Credits: Warhammer 40,000 and Games WorkshopPerhaps one of the most disturbing and creepy mysteries of Warhammer 40,000 is the mass disappearance of Fornax Aleph, where an entire Hive World’s inhabitants seemingly vanished into thin air with no indication of any skirmish or battles.
But even more terrifying than the disappearance of billions of people were the Imperial Guards and even the Adeptus Astartes reporting hearing bloodcurdling human screams and pleas for help in the dead of night on a planet that had no inhabitants. To this day, those screams are pervasive in the nights of Fornax Aleph, and nobody knows their source.

The Halo Devices are arcane constructs only found within the sectors of the Halo Stars, which gives them their name. It’s said that these devices promise a mortal soul the immortality that they seek, which is why wealthy members of the Imperium of Mankind are willing to pay the price of entire planets to secure one for themselves.
But that is not the only price they pay, as these Halo Devices, to give you that immortality, vigor, and intellect, take away your humanity little by little. The longer one possesses a device, the more influence it gains on its host, until that host turns into an abomination that seeks sustenance from the flesh of their fellow humans.
This device also claims to physically morph one into a grotesque monstrosity that is utterly horrifying and revolting to look at, which gets worse the longer that device possesses its host. And to this day, no one knows why this happens.
