When it comes to the Demon Slayer universe, the villains are not just a major part of the narrative; they completely shape the story, serving as a perfect counterpoint to the heroes. While some villains are purely evil, others are thoughtfully written characters with deep lore that elevates their presence.
With that in mind, let’s dive into the Twelve Kizuki demons, who serve as the primary villains of the series. Here are the best-written Demon Slayer villains, ranked by their character lore and buildup.
| TITLE | Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba |
| CREATOR | Koyoharu Gotouge |
| ANIME RELEASE DATE | April 6, 2019 |
| IMDb RATING (As of June 2, 2026) | 8.6/10 |
| WHERE TO WATCH | Crunchyroll, Netflix |
10 Gyokko’s Childhood Obsession Makes Him the Most Disturbing Villain
Gyokko from Demon Slayer | Credits: UfotableIf we dive deeper into Gyokko’s backstory, he may be one of the most disturbing and grotesque villains Koyoharu Gotouge wrote in the Demon Slayer series. As a human, Managi was born and raised in a village along the coast. One day, his parents went out fishing, but only their mangled bodies were returned.
And what did Managi do? Instead of mourning their deaths, he used their mangled limbs to create his “art.” It was as if Gyokko was born to be a demon; his psychologically horrifying personality and obsession made him a perfect fit for that role, even when he was still human.
9 Hantengu Was Perfectly Designed to Be Hated in the Series
Hantengu from Demon Slayer | Credits: UfotableHantengu was the perfect character to hate in the series, exactly as he was meant to be. There is nothing redeemable about the former Upper Rank Four demon. Even as a child, Hantengu was a habitual liar who deflected blame onto everyone else. And his behavior only grew worse with age. He was so infuriating that even a goofy character like Tanjiro lost his cool.
Throughout most of his adult life, Hantengu committed countless heinous crimes, stealing from innocent people and murdering others in various towns and cities. He was also married several times and had children, yet he falsely believed he was being mistreated and, in retaliation, killed his wives and children. That same bitterness and selfishness carried over when Muzan turned him into a demon.
8 Daki’s Backstory Brings the Tragedy of Beauty in Demon Slayer
Daki from Demon Slayer | Credits: UfotableDaki’s story highlights a kind of tragedy that becomes an increasingly common theme in the backstories of Demon Slayer’s villains. She was born alongside her brother in the lowest class of the Entertainment District. Her mother was a former prostitute with mental health issues, and her father was likely a customer. Ume, Daki’s human name, was also the most beautiful girl in the community, earning the title “Shiraume.”
However, everything went wrong when she stabbed a samurai in the eye for insulting her brother. In retaliation, she was tied up, burned alive, and left to die until her brother found her. Upper Moon Two, Doma, came across them and turned Ume into the demon Daki.
7 Kaigaku Was Written as a Perfect Closure to Zenitsu’s Character Arc
Kaigaku from Demon Slayer | Credits: UfotableKaigaku is one of the most intricately written characters, in our opinion, especially in relation to Zenitsu’s character growth arc. Having trained under the same master, the former Thunder Hashira Jigoro Kuwajima, Kaigaku always excelled in Thunder Breathing and was able to perform every form except the First Form, which, by contrast, was the only form Zenitsu mastered.
After news spread that Kaigaku had betrayed the Demon Slayer Corps and become a demon, Jigoro could not bear the shame and took his own life. When Zenitsu learned what had happened, the once cowardly and fearful swordsman locked in and confronted the new Upper Rank Six demon in Infinity Castle.
6 Gyutaro Has the Perfect Villain Arc Born From Resentment
Gyutaro from Demon Slayer | Credits: UfotableDaki’s older brother, Gyutaro, is one of the most controversial and traumatized villains in the Demon Slayer series. He was constantly abused as a child by his mother, who repeatedly reminded him that he was the result of an unwanted pregnancy. On top of that, others mistreated him because of his hygiene, poverty, and appearance, until something in him finally snapped.
Gyutaro became extremely violent and went on to seriously injure and kill people, including his own abusive mother. He even killed others simply for being rich, driven by resentment. He stands as a prime example of how society can create a monster that eventually turns back on it.
5 Doma’s Character Portrays a Dark Side of Parenthood in the Series
Doma from Demon Slayer | Credits: UfotableDoma is probably one of the most hated Demon Slayer villains of all time, and part of that can be traced back to his parents’ upbringing, a dark concept explored by Koyoharu Gotouge. Born with rainbow-colored eyes and pale hair, he was treated like a divine being by everyone around him, including his own parents. Over time, the idea that he was above everyone else became deeply ingrained in his mind and carried over into his life as a demon.
As a demon, Doma leads his own cult-like group of worshippers and, as expected, devours his own followers — sometimes seemingly for amusement. Gotouge crafted him as both elegant and deeply disturbed, a combination that only fueled fans’ hatred toward him even more.
4 Rui’s Obsession with Building a Family Created a Complex Storyline
Rui from Demon Slayer | Credits: UfotableRui is the earliest, most complex villain we saw in the series, the main antagonist of the Mount Natagumo Arc. He began creating his own family, a group of demons formed by taking in strays and abandoned people, often against their will.
His obsession with building a family stems from the loss of his real one, turning a universal human desire into something deeply unsettling. Through Rui, Gotouge explored a dark and twisted version of the concept of family, which is exactly why his character worked so well.
3 No Other Demon Slayer Villain’s Backstory Hits Harder Than Akaza’s
Akaza from Demon Slayer | Credits: UfotableIf we’re really looking for the best-written Demon Slayer villains, it’s tough not to put Akaza in the top three. At the beginning of the series, Akaza comes off as a regular, battle-hungry demon during the Mugen Train Arc, but his true tragedy unfolds during the Infinity Castle Arc, where we fully explore his backstory.
His painful backstory is so extensive that this short entry wouldn’t do it justice. The tragedy of losing everything he loved explains the contradiction at his core: a man who despises weakness because he once failed to protect those dearest to him. Gotouge’s masterstroke is unmistakable in Akaza’s story.
2 Muzan Kibutsuji’s Fear of Death Drives His Character in the Series
Muzan Kibutsuji from Demon Slayer | Credits: UfotableMuzan Kibutsuji is one of the best-constructed antagonists in the shonen genre, not because he has an absurdly powerful narrative or backstory, but because he simply works. At his core, the overarching antagonist is driven by fear, a primal emotion that we rarely see define villains; his fear of death shapes his every action.
Gotouge essentially took an emotion usually meant to affect the protagonist and made it the fuel for the antagonist, a bold and risky choice that absolutely paid off. The series consistently portrays him as a coward hiding behind immense power, and that contradiction makes him a fascinating final antagonist.
1 Kokushibo Has the Best Villain Backstory in Demon Slayer
Kokushibo from Demon Slayer | Credits: UfotableThe only demon in the series capable of using a Breathing Style, Upper Rank One Kokushibo sometimes feels more like the main antagonist than Muzan. He has a compelling narrative of envy tied to his brother, Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the strongest Demon Slayer. While Yoriichi excelled at everything, Michikatsu grew tired of always being second best and accepted Muzan’s offer to become a demon.
What makes his character arc even more powerful is that Gotouge never grants him the victory he wanted most: killing Yoriichi. Before Kokushibo could finally achieve his lifelong goal, Yoriichi died of old age. His story raises the same question again and again: in the end, was it worth it?
| RANKING | CHARACTER | TWELVE KIZUKI RANKING |
| 1 | Kokushibo | Upper Rank One |
| 2 | Muzan Kibutsuji | Demon King |
| 3 | Akaza | Upper Rank Three |
| 4 | Rui | Lower Rank Five |
| 5 | Doma | Upper Rank Two |
| 6 | Gyutaro | Former Upper Rank Six |
| 7 | Kaigaku | Upper Rank Six |
| 8 | Daki | Former Upper Rank Six |
| 9 | Hantengu | Former Upper Rank Four |
| 10 | Gyokko | Upper Rank Five |
