The differing opinions were created after the release of Patty Jenkins’ 2017 film Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot. After Cameron had some negative remarks for the movie, Lynda Carter made him her sworn enemy.

James Cameron thought Wonder Woman was a step backwards for Hollywood

The world was happy and in love with Gal Gadot’s portrayal of an iconic character set in the DCEU in Wonder Woman. After taking on the mantle, Gadot found worldwide fame and critical acclaim alongside the support of Lynda Carter who portrayed the role on American TV shows back in the ’70s.

In Cameron’s movies, women were always based on their grit and not just beauty. Sarah Connor in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Neytiri in Avatar: The Way of Water, and Rose in Titanic are some of the examples.

During his conversation with The Guardian, the veteran director talked about the excitement surrounding the release of Wonder Woman and how it was all in vain. According to James Cameron, the portrayal of Gal Gadot in the film was a step backwards for Hollywood.

All of the self-congratulatory back-patting Hollywood’s been doing over Wonder Woman has been so misguided. She’s an objectified icon, and it’s just male Hollywood doing the same old thing! I’m not saying I didn’t like the movie but, to me, it’s a step backwards.

He further continued,

Sarah Connor was not a beauty icon. She was strong, she was troubled, she was a terrible mother, and she earned the respect of the audience through pure grit. And to me, [the benefit of characters like Sarah] is so obvious. I mean, half the audience is female!

Although there are many who would agree with what Cameron had to say about the film, former Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter was not one of them. In fact, she was quite vocal about it too.

The actress publicly slammed the Titanic director for his remarks about Wonder Woman and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with director Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot.

Lynda Carter publicly slammed James Cameron for his words

After James Cameron had left his remarks on Wonder Woman for the world to infer as they wish, Lynda Carter took things up a notch. Carter who is known for making the character of Wonder Woman famous with her TV show, did not hold back in slamming Mr. Cameron for his comments.

Taking to her Facebook page in 2017, the actress wrote a lengthy post addressed to Cameron. The actress stated that his jabs at an amazing director were not in good light.

To James Cameron -STOP dissing WW: You poor soul. Perhaps you do not understand the character. I most certainly do. Like all women–we are more than the sum of our parts.

She further continued,

Your thuggish jabs at a brilliant director, Patty Jenkins, are ill advised. This movie was spot on. Gal Gadot was great. I know, Mr. Cameron–because I have embodied this character for more than 40 years. So–STOP IT.

Although Cameron is entitled to hold his opinion, several people also sided with Carter on her message. Despite the differing opinions, Wonder Woman received great ratings and a warm welcome from the world.

The film currently stands at a rating of 7.3/10 on IMDb and a whopping 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. With Gal Gadot in the lead and Patty Jenkins at the director’s chair, Wonder Woman is available to stream on Max in the U.S.
