Asano entered Hollywood more than a decade back after becoming a notable name in the Japanese film industry. He appeared as Hogun in the Thor films in the MCU. He also appeared in films like 47 Ronin, Silence, Midway, and Mortal Kombat. However, it was his Shōgun role that gave his deserved fame in the industry.

Tadanobu Asano’s Golden Globe achievement is something to be engraved in the history of the awards. The Japanese actor faced some tough competition in the category and emerged as the winner, thanks to his powerful performance as Kashigi Yabushige in Shōgun.

Though Asano was the lucky one to walk away with the award, there was no dearth of talents in the category. Interestingly, he beat the likes of Harrison Ford and Javier Bardem to win the award. Ford, 82, was seen in a rather different role in his career in Shrinking, playing Paul Rhodes who is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Bardem’s nomination came in a role that was deemed controversial by many. He played the fictional version of Jose Menendez in the Netflix series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Bardem has previously won the Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture award at the Golden Globes for No Country for Old Men. He won the Oscar for that role as well.

Other nominees in the category included Jack Lowden for his role as River Cartwright in Slow Horses, Diego Luno for La Máquina, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach for The Bear. It is the second nomination for Moss-Bachrach in the category for the series.

Asano’s FX drama earned four nominations at the Golden Globes, winning in all four. Besides Asano, his co-stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won the Best Actor and Actress awards in television respectively. The show also won the Best Television Drama Series award.

Tadanobu Asano perfectly captured one of the antagonistic characters in Shōgun. His character Kashigi Yabushige is a brilliant and charismatic yet brutal lord who has his own agendas in the series. He serves Hiroyuki Sanada’s Toranaga but has no issues in changing his loyalties if it helps him to get ahead.

After winning the Golden Globe for the role, Asano introduced himself to the stars present at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and the viewers watching from home. He also mentioned how big of an achievement it was for him as an actor. Asano shared in his speech (via People):

Wow, maybe you don’t know me. I’m an actor from Japan and my name is Tadanobu Asano. This is a very big present for me! I’m very happy. Thank you!

He was also nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Emmy but lost it to Billy Crudup. In the Emmys, the show set a record when it was nominated in 25 categories and won 18. While the show is set to return for two more seasons, Asano’s return is highly unlikely considering that his character was killed in the first season.

Shōgun is now available for streaming on Hulu.
