And it didn’t take long for the Maple Leafs to turn him into a trade asset on the first day of free agency.
On Wednesday, right after they’d finally announced the signing of free agent Bobrovsky for three years at $7 million US a season, Hildeby was packaged to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a long-time Leafs nemesis winger, Nick Paul. Toronto also had to give up a third round pick in 2028 and a fourth rounder next year for Paul.
The 6-foot-7 ‘Hildebeast’ showed he’s NHL ready last season with 23 games and a career .906 save percentage. But there was Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll ahead of him, Woll traded a few days ago, but pressure also coming from the farm in Artur Akhtyamov’s stellar season for the Calder Cup-winning Marlies. The Leafs also had to shed some salary as Bobrovsky and their other Wednesday deals for forwards were processed.

Paul is a Mississauga, Ont., native who spent five seasons with the Lightning, always seeming to hurt the Leafs with a big goal or play. Before that, he figured prominently in the Battle of Ontario as an Ottawa Senator. But last season was something of a disappointment, netting just seven goals and chipping in eight assists in 51 games with time off for injuries.
The Leafs also added winger Zach MacEwan from the New Jersey Devils, though he played just three NHL games in all last season.
