Appearing on The Escape Pod, Robert Kirkman discussed how he ranked the seasons of Invincible. Season 2, for Robert Kirkman, appeared at the bottom, while on top was Season 4. The hosts of the podcast, Alex Azor and Andrew Parker, did not question the low ranking of Season 2, but were shocked that Season 1 came in at number 3.
Kirkman’s rankings put Season 4 on top, followed by Season 3, then Season 1, and then Season 2. The creator of the comics said that the top ranking for Season 4 could be a direct result of recency bias, given that all the clips and cuts are still fresh in his head, but there is a solid rationale that is seen across rankings when it comes to the various Seasons of Invincible, which usually place Season 2 at the bottom.
Robert Kirkman Blames Recency Bias For Putting Season 4 On Top
Season 4 of Invincible wrapped up last week, with the entire storyline still being fresh in the minds of the creators and the audience. Season 4 definitely explored some really fun ideas and changed the paradigm of the story completely. It makes sense, even objectively speaking, to put the season on top, but Kirkman himself believes that it’s recency bias that is driving Season 4’s lead on the list.
Season 1 of the show managed to deliver a great entry into the world, something that brought in a whole new set of fans to watch the show. Its twists cemented the fandom, which was already hooked thanks to how the first episode ended. Season 3 brought in some concepts that changed the story, while Season 4 upended the paradigm and status quo of the show entirely. Now, while Season 2 introduced a slew of important characters, none of them were actually able to get things going until the next season. Season 2 felt like a whole lot of setup for the actual story to get going with Season 3.
Season 2 of Invincible Was All Set Up
Season 2 of Invincible introduced a lot of characters that only became plot-relevant in Season 3. While Angstrom Levy made quite an impression in Season 2, he came into his element in Season 3, despite the massive battle that he had with Mark. Season 2 also introduced Oliver, and even set up Conquest, all of which only started working out come Season 3.
All in all, Season 2 was the season we needed for Season 3 and 4 to work, but by itself, it would pale in comparison to even Season 1. Kirkman’s list is often echoed by fans, even if he only officially placed it on record now. Fans are sure to get an updated list when Season 5 rolls around, which will make its way to streaming as early as 2027.
