Supergirl was supposed to be the DC Universe’s confident second swing. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, it adapts Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. It sends Milly Alcock‘s Kara Zor-El on a bloody interstellar revenge trip with Eve Ridley’s Ruthye Marye Knoll in tow.
It reached theaters on June 26, 2026, and did not land the way DC Studios wanted. Now it gets a second life. Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that Supergirl starts streaming on HBO Max on Thursday, September 10, 2026, roughly 11 weeks after its theatrical debut.
An HBO linear premiere follows two days later, and an ASL version drops alongside the main release. It is performed by Catalene Sacchetti and directed by Jonaz McMillan, who previously worked on The Pitt with ASL. For a movie that never quite found its crowd in cinemas, streaming is where it finally gets a proper second look.
Supergirl Streaming Release Date and How to Watch It Now
Supergirl makes its global streaming debut exclusively on HBO Max on September 10. That works out to a 76-day gap between the theatrical run and the streaming drop, which is a fairly standard turnaround for a Warner Bros. release these days.
If you would rather watch it on TV, the film premieres on HBO linear on Saturday, September 12 at 8 p.m. ET. The film is included with an HBO Max subscription, so there is no extra rental fee once you are signed up. Any active plan will get you in, though picture quality and simultaneous streams vary by tier.
But you do not actually have to wait for the 10th. Supergirl has been available digitally since July 28, 2026. You can rent or buy it right now on Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and other participating platforms, in both HD and SD.
Physical media lands even closer to the streaming date. The 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions hit shelves on Tuesday, September 8, two days before HBO Max gets the film. Paying for it does get you something extra. The digital, 4K, and Blu-ray versions include more than 90 minutes of bonus features, covering deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes documentaries, and a featurette on adapting Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic.
Alongside Milly Alcock, the cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, plus David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet as Superman, and Jason Momoa as Lobo.
Supergirl Needs a Win on Streaming After Box Office Failure
Milly Alcock in a still from Supergirl | Credits: Warner Bros. The theatrical run was rough. Supergirl opened to $37.1 million domestically and $62.6 million worldwide, then limped to a $126 million global finish. Against a reported $180 million budget and roughly $100 million in marketing, that adds up to a loss somewhere between $100 million and $120 million.
Reviews did not help, as the film sits at 53% on Rotten Tomatoes with a much friendlier 72% audience score, a steep drop from Superman‘s 83% (figures are as of September 4, 2026). A script about grief and revenge without commitment, murky visuals that waste the comic’s cosmic colour palette, and a Mad Max derivative villain brought down the movie.
That is exactly why the HBO Max numbers matter. Alcock returns as Kara in 2027’s Man of Tomorrow, and a strong streaming showing is the cheapest way to prove she is worth building around.
