selena gomez, wizards of waverly place, max’s pretty little liars

SUMMARY

  • After more than a decade since the original Wizards of Waverly Place, Selena Gomez returns with a sequel premiering on October 29, 2024.
  • There seems to be both excitement and concern in the air due to recent reboot failures, like Max's Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl.
  • Although Gomez's original show was beloved for its humor and fantasy elements, recent reboot struggles seem concerning for the actress’ return.

Following the success and appreciation showered upon the original Disney show Wizards of Waverly Place, Selena Gomez planned to capitalize on the popularity of her 2007 series, with a brand new and upcoming sequel. However, as the singer/actress awaits her new show, there seem to be some major challenges awaiting her show.

Set to premiere on October 29, 2024, just in time for Halloween, Selena Gomez’s Wizards of Waverly Place sequel seems to await a disturbing fate, based on how the Pretty Little Liars reboot got canceled just after two seasons. Well, not just the Max reboot; considering how the Gossip Girl reboot and several such shows have fallen into the abyss after failing to get traction, Gomez’s show seems to have a curse to break.

A Spellbinding Return for Selena Gomez’s Wizards of Waverly Place

Prior to becoming the beloved singer, making fans groove to her music, Selena Gomez had charmed her way into audiences’ hearts with her antics and magical mishaps as Alex Russo in Disney’s 2007 show Wizards of Waverly Place. Appearing in the fantasy teen sitcom created by Todd J. Greenwald, alongside David Henrie and Jake T. Austin, Gomez had garnered appreciation and a loyal fanbase.

Now, after more than a decade since the end of the beloved Disney show in 2012, Selena Gomez once again made headlines surrounding Wizards of Waverly Place. Only this time, it’s about a sequel to the original show. Returning as Alex Russo, with her charisma and newfound experiences, Gomez’s new chapter has promised to rekindle the magic that captivated audiences over a decade ago.

Scheduled to premiere on October 29, 2024, around Halloween, the upcoming sequel will not only see Selena Gomez but also witness David Henrie’s return as Justin Russo. Meanwhile, considering how the original series was a cultural phenomenon, that blended comedy with fantasy and left fans craving for more—the beloved characters’ return with fresh adventures in the new sequel is poised to enchant both old fans and new viewers.

Will Selena Gomez’s Upcoming Show Face the Curse of Reboots?

However, as excitement builds for Selena Gomez’s much-anticipated sequel to Wizards of Waverly Place, there seem to be whispers of concern echoing through the fandom, especially in light of recent reboot misfortunes. Despite the hype surrounding Gomez’s return to Waverly Place, it’s hard not to notice the graveyard of failed reboots littering television history.

The first one that comes to our mind is Max’s Pretty Little Liars reboot, which aimed to capture the suspenseful thrill of the original, but ended up being a quick flicker. As per Collider, before it could even build the storyline and captivate audiences, the show got canceled after just two seasons. Kicking off in 2022 under the title Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, the show failed to keep audiences hooked, despite telling new delightfully sinful stories.

Well, it’s not just the Pretty Little Liars reboot—similar fates have befallen the Gossip Girl revival (canceled after 2 seasons), Heroes Reborn (canceled after 4 seasons), The Odd Couple (canceled after 3 seasons), and even Magnum, P.I. (canceled after 4 seasons). It seems most of these shows, although returned to pay tribute to the nostalgia, eventually failed to recapture the original show’s spirit.

Therefore, as October approaches and with it, the premiere of Wizards of Waverly Place, there seems to be a rise in anxiety among fans. But as of now, we are left with nothing but hope for Selena Gomez’s magic to break the curse of failed reboots and sequels. With her talent and the original’s charming legacy, maybe this sequel will rise above the reboot graveyard and become a spellbinding success.
