It’s been over two years since Warner Bros. canceled DC’s Batgirl movie, and fans still can’t get over it. Well, how can they, especially since the movie was set to feature Brendan Fraser as a supervillain? Can you believe, the Oscar winner, who has spent his entire career playing heroic roles, was hired to play Firefly?
Well, we can’t believe it anymore, now that Warner Bros. has canceled the movie anyway. But all we can do is imagine how cool it would have been to see Brendan Fraser pitted against Michael Keaton’s Batman and Leslie Grace’s Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl.
Warner Bros. canceled Batgirl movie with Brendan Fraser as Firefly
Despite previously creating hype among fans with Michael Keaton‘s return as Batman, alongside Leslie Grace taking on the role of Barbara Gordon, DC’s Batgirl movie was ultimately canceled in August 2022. Now, while fans had been reeling about this cancellation, things aggravated after they learned that Brendan Fraser was set to appear in the movie as a supervillain.
Yes, the Oscar winner who has been a Hollywood staple for ages, playing heroic roles since the early 90s, was cast as Firefly in Batgirl. Had this movie been released, it would have been Brendan Fraser‘s first significant role as a villain. Although he has appeared as a despised character in Killers of the Flower Moon, for defending Robert De Niro’s William Hale in the plot to kill his nephew’s Osage Indian wife, Fraser wasn’t the designated villain of the film.
But, Batgirl would have marked the first time in Brendan Fraser’s career to feature him as not just a villain, but a supervillain. Even the directors of the film, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah believed that Fraser would have given an unforgettable performance in the canceled DCEU film. Speaking with Yahoo! Entertainment, the filmmakers praised Fraser’s commitment and expressed their grief over how fans will never get to see it.
Why was it canceled and is there hope to see the film ever again?
Now, while fans have been urging Warner Bros. to release the film for over two years so that audiences are not robbed of Brendan Fraser’s first-ever villain role, it seems highly unlikely that the studio will hear their pleas. Especially after ScreenRant cited the shift in leadership and WB’s cost-cutting mission as the reason behind axing Batgirl, it feels like there is little to no hope of the movie ever getting released.
Overall, with Warner Bros. using Batgirl to write it off as a tax break in order to recoup the costs that had been spent on the DCEU movie, it feels like a confirmation that the film will never grace the theaters or a streaming platform, as it would cost the studio hell lot of money. So it seems that the only hope for fans to get a glimpse of the Batgirl movie is through previously released set photos, videos, and behind-the-scenes posts.
But, while the solo Batgirl movie might have been shelved forever, it doesn’t mean that the hero has lost her shot at a big-screen adventure. With James Gunn taking over the DC Universe, there’s a high chance of Barbara Gordon’s appearance in the new franchise, sooner or later. But sadly, there’s no news of whether Brendan Fraser will ever be called to play the DC villain, Firefly.
