Apple TV+‘s new Israeli thriller Unconditional premiered on May 8 with its first two episodes, setting up a tense mystery involving international crime, hidden identities, and a mother desperately trying to save her daughter. Created by Adam Bizanski and Dana Idisis, the eight-episode series stars Liraz Chamami as Orna and newcomer Talia Lynne Ronn as Gali. The supporting cast also includes Amir Haddad, Yossi Marshek, Evgenia Dodina, and Vladimir Friedman. (via Apple TV Press)
The thriller follows what was supposed to be a simple mother-daughter trip abroad. Instead, it becomes a nightmare after Gali is suddenly arrested in Moscow on dr*g trafficking charges. While authorities insist she is guilty, Orna refuses to believe her daughter is involved in smuggling. Across the first two episodes, the show slowly reveals that Gali may have been hiding far more than her mother ever realized.
Gali Is Arrested for Dr*g Trafficking at Moscow Airport

Orna and Gali are preparing to leave Moscow after their trip when armed officers suddenly stop Gali at the airport. Without much explanation, she is dragged away and accused of dr*g trafficking. The arrest happens so quickly that both Orna and the audience barely understand what is going on.
The most unsettling part of the sequence is how little information is actually provided. The authorities never properly explain what evidence they have against Gali, and Orna is given almost no opportunity to speak to her daughter. One moment, they are preparing to board a flight, and the next, they are violently separated.
The scene perfectly highlights the helplessness Orna feels throughout the first two episodes. She is in a foreign country, surrounded by people speaking languages she does not fully understand, while government officials and police officers refuse to provide clear answers. Gali herself also seems terrified and confused, which adds to the mystery. The series carefully avoids confirming whether she is innocent or hiding something.
As Orna begins trying to secure legal help and contact Israeli authorities, she realizes the situation may be much larger than a simple dr*g arrest. Every institution she approaches appears more interested in controlling the situation than helping her understand what truly happened.
What Does Orna Find in the Stuffed Toy?

Instead of finding dr*gs or money, she uncovers multiple passports belonging to random middle-aged men.
The discovery raises disturbing questions, further deepening the mystery. Why would Gali be carrying passports belonging to strangers? Was she knowingly involved in something illegal? Or is she being used as a pawn in a larger scheme?
At the end of episode 2, the mystery deepens when Orna later notices that some of these same men appear in photographs connected to Gali. The passports soon become the central mystery of the early episodes. Orna becomes obsessed with finding out who these men are and why her daughter had documents connected to them.
This is where Dori becomes important. His relationship with Orna is still unconfirmed, yet he seems to be there for her every step of the way. He helps Orna investigate the identities attached to the passports, hoping to uncover a larger trafficking or espionage network. However, the investigation only creates more confusion because the passports turn out to be fake. The identities do not exist in reality.
Every ray of hope that Orna seems to be holding on to turns out to be a dead end, and we see how helpless and lost she truly feels. If the passports are fabricated, then whoever planted or created them is operating at a much higher level. It also suggests that Gali may have been caught in something involving organized crime, intelligence operations, or identity fraud rather than ordinary dr*g smuggling.
Episodes 1 and 2 deliberately spin the narrative in various directions to create a burgeoning mystery that gets resolved in the finale, perhaps. Gali’s arrest seems to be connected to something far more dangerous than the authorities are publicly admitting.
Why Did the Foreign Ministry Ask Orna Not to Give TV Interviews?

She posts on social media to garner support, and people even donate money so that Orna can get all the help she needs. Israeli officials, however, seem uncomfortable with the case becoming too public.
The Foreign Ministry, especially Betty and Ido, who are working the case, ask Orna not to give interviews, claiming they want to take a subtle diplomatic approach to securing Gali’s release. Officially, they argue that media pressure could make negotiations with Russian authorities more difficult. But the request quickly starts feeling manipulative rather than supportive.
The ministry appears more interested in controlling the narrative than helping Orna figure a way out. This becomes especially noticeable through Ido, who presents himself as caring and sympathetic toward Orna. He comforts her and earns her trust, only to later use personal information against her.
One of the more shocking moments comes when Ido informs the television program that Gali had previously been arrested for dr*gs during high school. The revelation blindsides Orna because she shared that information privately while emotionally vulnerable. The move feels deeply calculated, almost villainous, because it subtly shifts public perception against Gali.
Instead of focusing on whether Gali was framed, public attention suddenly turns toward her past behavior. The show uses this development to highlight how institutions often protect themselves first while families are left struggling for answers. It takes no time for the public to change their opinion and ask for their donations back. The situation spirals out of control until the public relations officer comes to the rescue and sorts out the situation.
Why Do the Radio Hosts Call Benny?
The ending of episode 2 delivers another emotionally devastating moment involving Benny. Earlier, we learned that Benny suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, which is why Orna chose not to tell him about Gali’s arrest. To protect him from stress and confusion, she allows him to believe that Gali is still happily traveling in India.
However, after Orna’s television interview airs, radio hosts decide to contact Benny directly to get his reaction to the scandal. The moment is painful because Benny has absolutely no idea what has happened.
Hearing strangers casually discuss Gali’s arrest forces him to confront the truth in the most public and humiliating way possible. The scene exposes how media sensationalism can devastate families already dealing with trauma. Benny loses grip of reality and eventually gets lost in his muddled thoughts. Orna hears him yelling and quickly manages the situation.
It also becomes one of the most emotionally grounded scenes in the first two episodes. While the show contains conspiracies, fake passports, and political maneuvering, Benny’s confusion reminds viewers that the story is ultimately about a family dealing with an unbelievable loss.
By the end of Episode 2, Unconditional has established itself as more than a straightforward thriller. Emotionally charged character arcs and a palpable mystery that ties everything together are just what mystery-loving viewers needed to keep them guessing. Most importantly, the truth behind Gali’s actions and her involvement in the entire situation is something we can’t wait to find out!
Unconditional is streaming on Apple TV+ with new episodes dropping every Friday.
