For the first time in Season 2, we also see the involvement of the FBI in capturing the predator of the episode. The episode also shows how an intelligent move from Karen was able to help the police find her quickly. Here are the five key takeaways from the episode about Scott Freeman and Karen Kummerer.
1 How Scott Freeman Embedded Himself Into Karen’s Life
A still from Worst Ex Ever Season 2 Episode 4 ‘Ride or Die’ | Credits: NetflixKaren Kummerer entered the dating world again in her late 40s in 2006 when she got divorced from her husband of 17 years. She was at a bar with her sister when Scott Freeman approached her and invited her to dance with him. Now, Karen was all over Scott at first, falling in love in no time. Karen’s niece, Brenna, was living with her at the time, and she was happy that her aunt had found love again. It seemed that nothing could go wrong with this romance. However, Scott’s red flags began to surface very quickly.
In a creepy revelation, Karen shared how a tarot card reader had told her that the Devil had entered her life. Karen was not looking for a committed relationship after her long marriage, but before she knew it, Scott had many of his things at her place. She shared in the documentary, “One day I came home, and all of a sudden, Scott had moved into my house.” She asked him to leave, but he convinced her that moving in was the best thing for them.
Not too long after, he began showing his controlling nature towards Karen. Brenna, too, noticed how Scott was making her aunt do things his way. One of the first major red flags was when they found illegal steroids in Karen’s refrigerator, belonging to Scott. Later, he wanted Brenna out of the house, which turned out to be Karen’s big mistake.
The episode’s opening quietly demonstrates how control rarely begins with violence. He made calculated moves each step of the way, reframing the invasion as romance and removing the one person from the picture who could see what was actually happening to Karen.
2 Scott’s Abusive Behavior Escalated Quickly
A still from Worst Ex Ever Season 2 Episode 4 ‘Ride or Die’ | Credits: NetflixOnce Brenna was out of the house, Scott Freeman’s abuse began. Karen Kummerer shared how Scott would pin her down on the bed and scream at her all night. He broke her phone so that she wouldn’t call the police. She even refused to talk about the abuse with Brenna. Her divorce had affected her self-confidence, which was a possible reason why she found it hard to break free from Scott.
The abuse got so bad that she went to work one day and put her phone on speaker so that her coworkers could witness Scott screaming at her and abusing her. It helped her to kick him out of the house and invite Brenna back in, but the abuse was far from over. He broke into the house and only left when Brenna threatened to call the police. When Karen was on her way to work, he unlocked her car at a stop sign and got in, and threatened her with a knife.
At this point, Karen got an order of protection against Scott and changed the locks to her house and her car. However, she didn’t change her car trunk lock, which was her second big mistake. Scott hid in her trunk and abducted her when she was on her way to work.
Scott’s escalation was very quick, from screaming at her and pinning her down to abducting her at knifepoint. Every time Karen tried to assert control, Scott just leveled up his violence to erase any boundaries she set. Even as he was losing control, he methodically planned things to a certain extent.
Karen was able to inform Brenna that she was being kidnapped, and she called the police. Detectives Jakari Young and Janet Hawkins of the Daytona Beach Police Department were immediately put on the case.
3 Kim’s Account Established a Pattern
A still from Worst Ex Ever Season 2 Episode 4 ‘Ride or Die’ | Credits: NetflixThe police looked for anyone with information on Scott Freeman to figure out where he would take Karen. That’s when the focus of the documentary shifts to Kim, who was a longtime partner of Scott and endured his abuse. When Kim learned about Karen’s kidnapping, she knew that Scott was capable of such things. She shared that he used drugs and was abusive towards her during their relationship.
Similar to Karen, Scott’s relationship with Kim also began lovingly. It was sunshine and roses for some time before she began to see a more ugly side of Scott. One night, he shoved her to the wall and threatened her. The screaming brought the cops, but Kim refused to make a statement against him, believing that it was a one-time thing over some drinks. He slowly isolated her from everyone.
Nine years into the relationship, Kim found him to be more aggressive than ever. When she looked into the reason, she found out that he had been using steroids. However, Scott was manic that Kim was snooping. When the police arrived, he tried to be aggressive and had to be subdued. That was when Kim put an end to their relationship.
Kim’s story exposes Scott’s violence as a rehearsed routine. The same loving beginning, the same gradual isolation, the same steroids fueling the same aggression. It appeared to be a behavioral pattern rather than situational or provoked. Kim was able to help the police with a few locations where Scott could’ve taken Karen.
4 Karen’s Smart Move Helped the Police Track Them
Karen Kummerer in a still from Worst Ex Ever Season 2 Episode 4 ‘Ride or Die’ | Credits: NetflixKaren Kummerer was trapped with Scott Freeman for several days. They spent the daytime driving to his target location and night time at motels. Karen also revealed that Scott had s*x with her without consent. However, Karen wasn’t just a silent victim. When he first abducted her, she managed to tell Brenna to call the police without him knowing. She later talked him into taking her to a bank to withdraw money, which gave away their location to the police.
Her most brilliant move was to pocket a notepad and a pen from one of the motels. When they stopped to eat at a barbecue place, she left a note in the restroom, asking the finder to call the Daytona Beach PD. Chef Dana Preston found the note and called the police. Karen similarly left notes during their multiple stops at different gas stations. It made it easier for the police to track their route.
Karen then talked Scott into withdrawing money from an ATM. In a way, Karen weaponized Scott’s own arrogance against him. He was so confident in his control that he never imagined she was leaving clues for the police. It helped the police and the FBI chase down Scott’s jeep.
They were stopped on a highway, and the police arrested Scott after pulling him out of the jeep and putting him on the floor. Karen was so scared that she refused to go anywhere without one of the officers, who assured her that he had a gun. It is a sobering reminder that outsmarting your abuser doesn’t undo the terror.
5 Where Is Scott Freeman Now?
A still from Worst Ex Ever Season 2 Episode 4 ‘Ride or Die’ | Credits: NetflixScott Freeman was charged with kidnapping, violation of a protection injunction, and stalking. The police had found a switchblade knife on the driver’s side of his jeep. They also found a rope, blankets, and a can used to smoke cocaine. It tells a story that the episode doesn’t need to spell out, as Scott was prepared for the worst scenario, and Karen was likely to end up dead if the police hadn’t found her in time.
He was extradited to Florida, where he stood trial for his charges in 2007. The jury found him guilty on all charges, and he was sentenced to life in prison on November 20, 2007. Scott Freeman passed away in jail in 2025. While Scott’s ending might feel satisfying to viewers, Karen was subjected to lifelong trauma.
She shared in the documentary that she couldn’t trust herself to be in another relationship. It is a hard situation to deal with for any victim. The documentary wisely lets the audience sit with that discomfort rather than offering a clean resolution.
