And somehow, Joyce appeared to be the more ruthless out of the three, probably because drugs had little to do with her actions. 1 What Made Katie Long Doubt Joyce Pelzer’s Story?

Katie Long didn’t have a reason to doubt Joyce Pelzer for anything until she brought up an ex-girlfriend who had gone missing. Katie earlier believed Joyce when she said that she and her then-wife were separated at the time, which turned out to be false. But Katie’s suspicions began to surface when Joyce told her that the police suspected her and questioned her regarding the case. She did some online research and found out that Shawndell McLeod had gone missing five years before Joyce and Katie met.

Her most shocking find was that Joyce was the police’s main person of interest in the case. She uncovered more details from her research and from Joyce’s version of how things went down between her and Shawndell. Joyce and Shawndell’s relationship did not end on good terms. Katie found out that the police had every reason to suspect Joyce after she gave a false testimony during her first interrogation.

Katie couldn’t forget how Shawndell’s mother talked about wanting to know what happened to her daughter. It was at this time that she began noticing Joyce’s controlling nature. She began dictating what Katie should and shouldn’t do. One particular incident, where Joyce pinned her to a wall and threatened her with a knife, confirmed to Katie that Joyce was not right in her mind. She knew right away not to get on Joyce’s bad side.

Once she began to peel the layers of lies that Joyce had created, she began seeing her true colors. Katie was more tactful in her approach. She stopped when Joyce started to get irritated with her questions. And she calmly handled the knife situation, asking Joyce to calm down. She has a crucial survival instinct that comes to protect her and seek justice for Shawndell later in the episode.

2 Detective Guest Never Gave Up Searching for Shawndell

Detective Guest was the investigating officer in the Shawndell McLeod missing case. Such missing cases are always troublesome for detectives, as most of them end up producing no results. However, Guest was determined to find some answers for the McLeod family and never gave up on the case. His investigation reached Joyce Pelzer very quickly, whom he brought in for questioning alongside her then-girlfriend, Rosalyn Lewis.

While Joyce revealed nothing to incriminate her, and Rosalyn backed up her story, her statement about her whereabouts turned out to be false upon investigation. Guest arrested her, but had to let her go due to a lack of evidence and a lack of a body. As time passed, any other detective would have moved on. But Guest kept track of the case and of Joyce. Every time, she was up to something, Guest knew. Which was how he found out about Katie.

Among the systemic failures of the police department, including detectives who dismiss victims and investigations that go nowhere, Guest stands out as an exception. Across the season, we get to witness both negligent and responsive officers. But it is rare to witness a cop who isn’t just responsive but committed to his victim. 3 Joyce’s Confession Left Katie Long Horrified

Katie Long still went along with Joyce Pelzer, but the moment she put the knife to her throat, Katie knew that this relationship was over. However, what Katie didn’t know was that this wasn’t the most horrifying thing she would experience with Joyce. One day, Joyce and Katie were casually going about their lives, when Joyce wanted to confide in Katie a secret. She told Katie that she had killed Shawndell.

Katie learned that Joyce did not like it when Shawndell ended the relationship and kicked her out of their home. To take revenge, Joyce allegedly hired a hitman to kidnap Shawndell. She and the hitman dug a big hole in the middle of nowhere and buried Shawndell alive. Interestingly, the hitman is never again mentioned in the entire episode, leaving the audience to really wonder about the presence of such a character.

Joyce’s story is not just scary, but it also speaks to the levels she would go to maintain control in a relationship. It is the episode’s most chilling moment, not because of what Joyce reveals, but because of how casually she does it. She doesn’t break down or unburden herself out of guilt. She shares a murder like a secret meant to bind Katie closer through fear.

Katie was too terrified to call the police. She would’ve probably remained silent and trapped in that relationship for a long time if Detective Guest hadn’t tracked her down and asked about Joyce. She took the opportunity to reveal the confession that Joyce had made to her. It was essentially a new start in the case for Detective Guest.

4 Joyce Pelzer Commits a Second Brutal Murder

While Katie’s confession helped Detective Guest to build a case against Joyce, the latter was unraveling due to how her marriage with Rosalyn Lewis fell apart. Rosalyn’s sister, Errica, appeared on the documentary to explain how Rosalyn found out about her cheating and wanted to get out of their marriage. However, Joyce was not ready to let go of Rosalyn.

And she decided to handle things the same way she did with Shawndell. She purchased a gun and headed to Rosalyn’s new home. However, she made the mistake of calling Katie and informing her of the plan. She told her that she would make Rosalyn disappear and tell the police that it was Rosalyn behind the murder of Shawndell. However, Katie was able to warn Rosalyn the first time and save her.

Rosalyn was scared for her life, but a few months later, she decided to confront Joyce and serve her divorce papers. She did not listen to her sister Errica’s advice to not deal with Joyce alone and went to meet with her at a motel. At the motel, Joyce stabbed Rosalyn multiple times. She succumbed to her injuries, but not before revealing to the police that it was Joyce who did this to her. The police tracked Joyce’s phone and found out that she was heading back to Katie’s, probably to kill her next.

A chase ensued, and Joyce pulled a gun on the police, resulting in a shootout. While she was hit in the neck, she survived the gunshot wound. Rosalyn had every warning and still chose to face her alone.

The episode doesn’t judge her for it, but it quietly shows how difficult it is for victims to fully internalize that someone they once loved is capable of killing them. What Joyce showed was a pattern. A partner tries to leave, and she immediately resorts to violence. And in Rosalyn’s case, she had stopped hiding her violence entirely.

5 Shawndell McLeod’s Family Finally Gets Some Justice

Joyce Pelzer went to jail for the murder of Rosalyn Lewis. She was put on trial and was found guilty of all charges. She was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. However, Shawndell still remained missing, and Detective Guest decided to talk to Joyce in jail, hoping that she would lead them to Shawndell. However, Joyce continued to spin the same tale she had planned, that it was Rosalyn who abducted and murdered Shawndell.

However, she didn’t know that Katie had earlier recorded their phone call, where Joyce elaborated her plan. While Joyce did give them a location for the body, search teams still couldn’t exactly pinpoint where the body was buried. Shawndell McLeod was never found, but the detective had Katie’s witness statement to take the Shawndell case to trial. Joyce was tried for her first murder, and the jury found her guilty. She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for that case.

Both the prosecutor and the detective believed that it was some measure of justice for Shawndell and her family. Detective Guest’s years-long persistence made sure that Joyce paid for what she did to Shawndell. But the episode doesn’t pretend that a guilty verdict replaces a proper burial for the victim. The justice here is incomplete, hard-won, and never quite enough for the people left behind.
