Isekai anime are full of many amazing heroes, but they are also full of some of the most evil villains as well. The isekai genre often involves medieval worlds, which creates the opportunity to showcase truly scummy characters who exploit power, lack any modern morality, and commit horrific acts.
So, let’s rank some of the most evil villains that we have seen in the isekai anime genre, ranking them on the basis of how evil they are, and if there is any turning around for them or not. Let’s dive in.
10 Oliver Schtrom – Wise Man’s Grandchild
Oliver Schtrom from Wise Man’s Grandchild | Credit: SILVER LINK.Oliver was originally a kind, noble man who cared deeply for his people, always thinking about how to elevate the lives of people living in his territory. However, his own people betrayed him, burned his house down, which killed his pregnant wife and the unborn child. This tragic event caused him to transform into a powerful demon.
His focus was on revenge. He manipulated innocent students, turned them into monsters to fight his wars, and planned the destruction of the empire itself. His actions in the anime caused many deaths. However, he ranks this low because with proper therapy, he has a way of becoming good again. However, he did cause a lot of destruction, making him qualified for this ranking.
9 Betelgeuse Romanee-Conti – Re:ZERO
Betelgeuse Romanee-Conti from Re:ZERO | Credit: White FoxBetelgeuse Romanee-Conti was a Sin Archbishop of the Witch Cult in Re:ZERO. He represented the sin of Sloth. The title of sloth doesn’t refer to him being lazy; he is actually quite active and destructive. Throughout the time he was alive as a member of the cult, he destroyed many villages and killed many people without a particular goal in mind other than the simple act of being evil.
In the scene, which is considered one of the darkest isekai moments ever, he tortured Rem in front of Subaru until Subaru’s mind was shattered. He cannot be reasoned with, as his own mind appears to be broken completely. However, he, too, was once a kind man, as revealed in the anime, which makes him rank this low.
8 Clementine – Overlord
Clementine from Overlord | Credit: MadhouseClementine is a prominent villain in the anime Overlord. She is a rogue warrior and a former member of the Black Scripture. She abandoned her human duties to join a dark cult and lived the life of an assassin who kills simply because she enjoys it. She clearly mentions that her past has nothing to do with her personality, and she has always been this way.
She is someone who loves to mock her enemies as they die by her hands, not even respecting the dead. There is no empathy in her, and in her eyes, life is nothing more than a simple thing that can be erased. However, she ranks this low because, while evil, she couldn’t commit much bigger evil acts, as she was eventually taken care of by Ainz.
7 Vassago Casals – Sword Art Online
Vassago Casals from Sword Art Online | Credit: A-1 PicturesWhile Sword Art Online is technically a VRMMO anime rather than a traditional “transported to another world” isekai, Vassago’s sheer, unadulterated malice made it impossible to leave him off this list.
Vassago Casals, also known as PoH, serves as a major antagonist in the franchise. He is someone who logged in the game after it had become clear that you cannot log out of it, all because of his own target that he was going to kill in the game. Furthermore, because of his troubled past, he had deep hatred for East Asians, which made him kill many others in the game.
He founded a guild and wasn’t evil, loyal to that. He sold them all out, surviving alone. After the game was over, he became part of a private military in America. Even in the Alicization arc of the anime, he was a menace. The people he killed ranged from professional criminals to literal children who were just enjoying the game, justifying his position in this ranking.
6 Malty S Melromarc – The Rising of the Shield Hero
Malty S Melromarc from The Rising of the Shield Hero | Credit: Kinema CitrusMalty S Melromarc, the first princess, is the reason that the world was so unkind to the protagonist in the anime. She is also famous as a character who was practically designed to be hated. When Naofumi was summoned to save her world, she pretended to be his ally, only to falsely accuse him of s*xual assault, which made the king banish Naofumi.
The reason she is ranked above Vassago is that, unlike him, there is no sad past or anything that justifies her evil actions. Furthermore, she was well aware of how important heroes are in that world, and she practically put the life of the entire kingdom on line by framing Naofumi. If Naofumi didn’t have a heart, he could’ve abandoned the kingdom, making it perfectly clear how evil her act was.
5 Zorzal El Caesar – GATE
Zorzal El Caesar from GATE | Credit: A-1 PicturesZorzal El Caesar is a prince in the fantasy world of GATE. And he is the perfect example of what a prince or any kind of royalty shouldn’t be. According to him, all people are tools to bring him pleasure. He is known for invading kingdoms, taking in slaves, and committing every war crime that you can think of. Furthermore, his evil nature also stems from his stupidity, which he shows against the Japanese military.
He ranks this high because he is a perfect example of what happens when power goes unchecked. Had he been a random villager in that world, his evil nature wouldn’t have had that much impact. However, it is because of the very fact that he holds power that many lives in the world of GATE have been destroyed.
4 Sugou Nobuyuki – Sword Art Online
Sugou Nobuyuki from Sword Art Online | Credit: A-1 PicturesMuch like Vassago, Sugou belongs to the Sword Art Online universe, pushing the boundaries of the traditional isekai definition. However, his completely scummy behavior and abuse of digital reality easily cement his spot among the genre’s most despised figures.
In the real world of the anime, he is a corporate executive and the former fiancé of Asuna. When the original death game ended, he intercepted the minds of 300 surviving players, including Asuna, and trapped them in a new virtual world, ALfheim Online, to use them as human guinea pigs for emotion-and memory-manipulation experiments.
What makes Sugou truly vile isn’t just his god-complex inside the game, but how his pathetic cowardice bleeds into the real world. After being defeated digitally, he resorted to a real-world ambush to try and murder Kirito. Combined with his horrific, non-consensual abuse of Asuna while she was held captive, Sugou easily ranks as one of the most detestable villains in anime history.
3 Ehit – Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest
Ehit from Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest | Credit: OverlapEhit is the ultimate antagonist of this anime. He is a god who is worshiped by the people of Tortus; however, in reality, he is an ancient entity full of malice. He is the one who summoned the high school students in that world, that too, purely for his own entertainment.
To him, the entire world is a game board. And if the game becomes boring, he creates new conflicts or summons new players. AKA, he just wants to have fun in his twisted way. His high position in this ranking is due to the scale of his evil.
2 Lanevus – Lord of Mysteries
Lanevus is a human with almost no powers in the world of Lord of Mysteries. However, he has committed several crimes in the anime that make him rank this high. He is a sociopath who cares about nothing else other than getting stronger. He worships an evil god, the True Creator, and schemes for that god’s descent on the human world, which would practically result in a huge genocide.
To ensure this ritual is complete, he planned to sacrifice an entire major city called Tingen. He ranks this high because his actions were all leading up to a huge genocide. The god he wanted to arrive in the real world was a powerful entity who could not even be thought about without risking madness and eventual death.

Regulus Corneas is yet another antagonist from the anime Re:ZERO. Just like Betelgeuse Romanee-Conti, he massacred many villages. Furthermore, he went out of his way to kidnap young girls and made them marry him. Those girls are not there just as his wives; they are the reason he is immortal as well. As he is always putting those girls’ lives on the line in order to survive himself.
Furthermore, in his own distorted worldview, he is the only one who has any rights at all. He would kill anyone, even if they looked at him in a way he didn’t like, as he knew he himself could not be killed. The reason he ranks on top is that there is no crime he has yet to commit. Just because he felt like it, he killed his own family as well. He is that evil.
