Spoiler Alert !!!
Warning, this review and recap contains spoilers for Season 3 Episode 1 of House of the Dragon, as well as notes from Blood and Fire, the novel the series is based on.
What happens in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1?
A sheep is roasted by a dragon in Westeros’ highlands. As it feeds, Rhaena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell) approaches, telling it to remain calm. She climbs upon its back, and after a short struggle, she disappears into the fog. At the Red Keep, Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) pulls Grand Maester Orwyle (Kurt Egyiawan) from his bed and threatens to execute him. Before Aemond can strike the blow, he receives word that Lord Larys (Matthew Needham) also fled the castle. He storms off.
In their transport, Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) begs Larys for milk of the poppy. He laments his fallen stature as king, which only becomes more dangerous when they’re stopped by soldiers loyal to Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy). They are asked to kneel and pledge their allegiance to the Queen, but Aegon refuses. The men are about to kill Aegon when Larys reveals their true identities. Aegon tells the soldiers that it is a lie, but Larys proves their identities by handing over the crown. He reminds the soldiers that delivering him to Rhaenyra alive will give them limitless riches. The soldier agrees, killing the rest of the travel party.
Rhaenyra speaks with Jace (Harry Collett) and the council about Alicent’s visit. She begged for her children to be spared but, more importantly, revealed that the Red Keep is vulnerable for their taking. The rest of the council remains skeptical, but Rhaenyra tells them they will launch their attack in two days. Alicent (Olivia Cooke) returns home, where she is asked to join the King in the throne room. She finds Aemond on the throne, who reveals his brother’s absence is an act of abdication. He will stay to guard King’s Landing while Lord Ormund and 15,000 Hightower soldiers march to Criston Cole (Fabian Frankle). The Triarchy will attack the Sea Snake’s fleet at any moment.
On the seas, Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) watches over his fleet. Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) kills soldiers who dare to fight back against him. Jason Lannister (Jefferson Hall) fled the battlefield. Ser Oscar Tully (Archie Barnes) delivers the report of the battle to Daemon when suddenly a new army emerges from the woods. The Starks, led by Ser Roderick Dustin (Tommy Flanagan), have arrived. He rolls Jason’s head to Daemon, who welcomes them to continue the hunt.

Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox) wanders through the woods, spotting a soldier sleeping with a local girl. He takes the matter to Criston Cole, along with his worries about Aemond’s arrival. While Gwayne believes the men need to be kept honest to their principles, Cole tells him the world will make them all beasts before the end.
Ulf (Tom Bennett) tells a story about his youth in Essos, where he performed sexual favors to a priest for coin. Hugh Hammer (Kieran Bew) and Addam of Hull (Clinton Liberty) listen to his story, with each feeling uneasy as they wait for Rhaenyra. Ulf grows upset that he will not get a castle after all, because he was promised knighthood, not a lordship.
Alicent quickly writes a note while complaining about Aemond’s presence to Helaena (Phia Saban). Helaena believes that Aemond is scared for the first time since he claimed Vhagar as his dragon. Alicent finishes her letter, calls in a knight, and sends him to deliver the message “on behalf of the King.” The letter arrives with Ormund (James Norton) and asks him to hold his position for three days until Aemond can join them. The soldiers will not go to the Red Keep.
On the ocean, Alyn (Abubakar Salim) joins Corlys in the Captain’s quarters. His father pours him a drink, and while Alyn tries to decline it, Coryls insists. They discuss Rhaenyra’s orders, but they agree that Aemond will not surrender. They discuss their relationship, with Corlys taking blame for the hardships Alyn and his brother faced in life. The alarm bells ring out, and Coryls dispatches ravens to Dragonstone.
Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall) tries to push Sharako Lohar (Abigail Thorn) to attack Corlys directly. He does not believe Rhaenyra will burn her own men alive, and it will blunt the force of the dragons. Instead, Sharako orders her detachment to sack High Tide, which she believes will take Coryls out of his element.
In the highlands, Rhaena is thrown from her dragon. She sings to Sheepstealer to calm down the dragon, but it roars and flies away. She is stranded, left on the rocky hills for hours. Later, Sheepstealer returns with another sheep and roasts it with dragon breath. They eat together. Rhaena climbs atop her dragon, and they ride for Dragonstone.
Alicent tells Aemond that he should have always been King and that Aegon did not have the mind to rule. She pleads with her son to return to Harrenhal, where he will be protected from dragonfire. If he can draw out Daemon and kill him, it will be a major blow to Rhaenyra’s plans. However, he will die if he stays at the Red Keep and takes on so many dragons at once. As she pleads with him, he moves closer to her and eventually kisses his mother. He leaves for Harrenhal.
Ulf hears creatures in the woods, which spook him mid-poop. He runs to Hugh and Addam, telling them he is leaving the island. Addam pushes back, but they are confronted by a witch. The witch is Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin), who tells the men they are needed at Dragonstone. Baela (Bethany Antonia) tells Rhaenyra about the start of the battle. When Rhaenyra tells her court she rides for battle, Jace tells the Kingsguard to hold her back as he goes to battle in her stead. He tells Baela this is their time to win a victory for his mother.
The battle rages on the seas, with dozens of ships set ablaze. When it is revealed that Lohar is their foe, Coryls tells Alyn to send their ship in her direction. When her men spot his ship, Lohar sends her ship after Coryls. While Tyland tries to remind her of their contract, she reveals their contract was only a means to kill Corlys.
On Dragonstone, Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) tries to comfort Rhaenyra, but she cannot believe her son betrayed her. While she may be a woman, she has the heart of a king. As Lohar chases Coryls, Jace and Baela arrive to the battle. Corlys orders his ship to make for Dragonstone, where they can force Lohar to run aground. When she sees the dragons, Lohar launches an anchor attached to a scorpion bolt, which nearly drowns Vermax. However, Baela and Moondancer cut the line at the last moment.
Corlys guides his helmsman through the pass, and Lohar continues to chase. Corlys eventually takes the helm and guides his ship through the very shallow waters. As he predicted, Lohar takes the bait and goes directly into the teeth. While all of her support ships crash, Lohar has the crew throw everything with any weight overboard, including Tyland Lannister. They also make it through the pass, with speed on their side.

As they clear the rocks, Corlys sees Driftmark ablaze. This phases Corlys, as Lohar predicted, but Alyn prepares his men for battle. The hand-to-hand battle commences when Lohar’s ship strikes Coryls’ on the side. The impact throws Corlys to the ground. When Corlys wakes up, he jumps straight into battle. When a sail drops, Alyn is knocked into the ocean, but he kills a soldier and finds footing on a rope ladder.
Corlys and Lohar finally meet in the battle. Before Corlys can land the final blow, the ships run aground. He is thrown into the water, and Alyn picks up the fight with Lohar. He slays Lohar with a stab to the throat. Alyn emerges from the water between the wreckage of the two ships.
Rhaena arrives at Dragonstone, she sees the battle raging and quickly joins the fight. However, she cannot control Sheepstealer, who burns as many boats, regardless of allegiance, as possible. Not realizing Sheepstealer is being ridden by Rhaena, Baela and Jace attack. However, Sheepstealer evades and then starts to chase after Baela. Jace realizes it is Rhaena and calls off his attack but flies low, causing Vermax to get hit by a second scorpion bolt. Moondancer cannot make it this time, and Vermax sinks to the bottom of the sea. Jace is shot with arrows by soldiers of the Triarchy and dies in the ocean.
Is House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1 worth watching?
Yes, House of the Dragon gets right back into the war with a good old-fashioned heap of tragic storytelling. We knew several of the characters in the series were not long for this world at the end of Season 2, but House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1 gets us straight into the destruction. Several big figures die before the end of the episode, with a few others whose fates seem up in the air.
There is no question that Jace is dead. How Rhaenyra handles this is going to be incredibly intriguing. The death of Lucerys almost broke her, and it seems likely that Jace’s death will be even harder on her. In Fire and Blood, the story often shows Rhaenyra as a weaker ruler who did not put herself into harms way until absolutely necessary. Once again, the writers have undermined that interpretation, showing that Rhaenyra not only meant to be on the battlefield, but was actively barred from entering the battle based on the opinions of her son and her Queensguard.
While Lohar was not in House of the Dragon for long, her impression will be felt. Thorn was a lot of fun in only a few episodes, and her unhinged characterization of Lohar was brilliant for this episode. It not only provided an incredible spark to the second half of the House of the Dragon premiere, but she gave us many of its best moments. Tossing Jefferson Hall overboard was quite the comedic moment, brilliantly set up earlier in the episode. While Hall had been playing a decent “stiff upper lip” Lannister, seeing both of his characters go down in the same episode is probably for the best.
The discussion of Rhaena’s role in Jace’s death is a heavy departure from Blood and Fire. While Jace always died in the Battle of the Gullet, the story comes across in a different light. There was no tale of a rogue dragon attacking all of the soldiers and, in general, there is no mention of Rhaena as an important player in the Dance of the Dragons. House of the Dragon has already played with the storyline from George R.R. Martin‘s original intentions, but frankly, changes like this increase the drama and open the door for more interesting character development.
Henry Collett did not have many great moments in House of the Dragon, but his actual death scene is memorable. Watching a dragon sink to the bottom of the ocean and drown is something I’m not going to forget anytime soon. Emma D’Arcy gets a great moment opposite Mizuno, but we’re sure she’ll have more to come in the rest of House of the Dragon.
It seems unlikely that we’re going to lose Steve Toussaint in such an unceremonious way, so we expect him to return. While the other dragon riders have very little to do in the episode, we’ve got to give a huge shoutout to Tom Bennett, mixing the incredibly dark tales of Westeros with one of House of the Dragon‘s funniest moments yet. Great self-awareness from House of the Dragon to have Rankin literally tell the characters they’re missing the battle.
Of course, there were things to get excited about for House of the Dragon. How Alyn of Hull and Corlys reunite will be intriguing. Seeing the fallout between Baela and Rhaena in the episodes ahead should make for an incredible moment or two. The news of Jace’s death reaching Larys, Alicent, Daemon, and Aemond will leave reverberations through the entire series.
House of the Dragon airs on HBO at 9 PM on Sunday nights.
