If you’re on the Civilian team, being alive isn’t enough to win. You need to rescue NPCs, protect Special Targets, prepare escape routes, and eventually get as many people out as possible. And if you’re playing as Michael, you need to stalk his victims, control the map, and build enough Bloodthirst to become a big threat.

If you’re still playing your first few matches or trying to improve your win rate, there’s a lot that you can learn to make a difference. Here are 10 useful tips, split between five strategies for Civilians and five for Michael Myers.

1. Find and Hide Special Targets Immediately

Your first priority as a Civilian should be finding the Special Targets scattered around Haddonfield. These NPCs are particularly important because Michael receives greater rewards for eliminating them.

Once you find one, talk to them and tell them to hide. Pay attention to where they go, because hiding removes them from your map and you’ll need to remember their locations later. With the Special Targets safe, your team can focus on preparing escape routes without constantly worrying about Michael finding them.

If you’re playing with friends, split up and have different players search different areas. This is much faster than having everyone search the same location.

2. Get NPCs to Call the Police

After warning NPC civilians about Michael, one of the most useful commands you can give them is to call the police. NPCs can handle the call without the same risk of failing a minigame that applies when players attempt it themselves.

Just remember that calling the authorities can also create noise and potentially attract Michael’s attention, so don’t assume you’re completely safe once the call is made.

3. Don’t Fight Michael Alone

Michael is extremely dangerous in close combat, particularly when he manages to grab an isolated Civilian. Your best option when he spots you is usually to create distance rather than trying to win a one-on-one fight.

Open streets are generally preferable to cramped interiors when you’re being chased, as they give you more room to use your stamina and avoid being cornered. If Michael grabs another player, make sure to free them first instead of trying to kill him. A quick shove can be surprisingly effective, while weapons are better saved for important moments.

A Pocket Knife is also an excellent item to have available, as it can help you escape a grab when you’re caught alone.

4. Prepare Multiple Escape Routes

Don’t put all your effort into a single escape route. Haddonfield contains several possible ways out, and the required items can vary between matches.

If Michael starts guarding one escape, move elsewhere and work on another. Spreading your team and objectives forces him to choose where to apply pressure. Once an exit is ready, don’t immediately abandon the NPCs you’ve rescued. Return to them and direct them toward safety.

The goal isn’t simply to escape yourself. The more residents you successfully evacuate, the better your chances of winning.

5. Stick Together When It Matters

Splitting up is useful when you’re searching for Special Targets and supplies, but regroup when Michael starts threatening your team. Multiple Civilians can protect each other, share resources, free grabbed teammates, and pressure Michael when necessary.

Pay close attention to the minimap, too. It can reveal other survivors and help you identify where important items are being carried. Combining things such as car keys, fuel, and repair equipment can turn a seemingly useless escape route into a viable one.

Don’t forget that tools and weapons have different purposes. Firecrackers and the Flare Gun can stun Michael, while a flashlight or road flare can interfere with him. Use these items to create an opportunity to escape rather than wasting them on unnecessary fights.

2. Hunt Special Targets First

Special Targets should be high on your priority list as Michael because they provide greater rewards. Civilians will also be trying to locate and hide these NPCs, making them particularly valuable early-game targets.

While using Shape Shift, look for the orange indicators that can reveal the general location of Special Targets. These indicators may not appear reliably every time, but when they do, they can help you narrow down your search.

Taking out valuable targets early can also help you build momentum before confronting experienced human players.

3. Turn Off the Lights and Phone Lines

Darkness is one of Michael’s biggest advantages. Cutting the power can make buildings easier to infiltrate and create opportunities to use your movement abilities without being immediately seen.

Turning off phone lines is similarly useful because it prevents or delays Civilians from contacting the police. Just remember that frightening people can cause them to flee, potentially making your job harder.

Use blackouts strategically rather than treating them as something you should activate everywhere immediately. The goal is to create an opening for an ambush.

4. Manage Bloodthirst and Your Abilities

Bloodthirst becomes increasingly important as the match progresses. Stalking, executing victims, and generally terrorizing Haddonfield can increase it, improving your effectiveness and providing useful bonuses such as stronger melee attacks and improved ability cooldowns.

Try to build Bloodthirst by dealing with NPCs before picking fights with organized player-controlled Civilians. Taking damage, getting knocked down, or standing in light can undermine your advantages.

5. Don’t Waste Time Chasing a Group

Sometimes Civilians will deliberately stay together and try to overwhelm Michael. If several players are constantly fighting or harassing you, don’t let them dictate the match.

Shape Shift away and hunt somewhere else. Their time spent fighting you is also time they’re not spending rescuing NPCs, preparing escapes, or completing objectives. Find an isolated target, pursue a Special Target, or attack another part of the map instead.

Also remember to check bodies after successful kills. Using Stalk on a defeated victim for a brief period can provide additional progression and help build your Bloodthirst before you move on to the next target.
