After the massive success of the four-season Netflix show The Witcher, the universe is now expanding with the upcoming animated movie, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. It promises to offer more monster-hunting action following Geralt of Rivia’s adventures while delving deeper into the character’s past.
The storylines of all The Witcher material have been taken from the series of books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. This animated film is based on Sapkowski’s short story ‘A Little Sacrifice’.
Sirens of the Deep is the second animated film that Netflix produced. Before this one, the streaming platform released The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. However, this will be the first animated flick released after Henry Cavill’s exit as Geralt from the live-action series, although, Liam Hemsworth has taken up the role from season 4 of the series.
When is The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep premiering?
During the Geeked Week of 2024, the fans got a sneak peek of the animated film which created quite a buzz online. Doug Cockle, who voiced Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher video game series, is also going to play the character in the animated film, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep.
The actor recorded an audio message for the fans where he could be heard talking to Jaskier (Joey Batey) about the premiere date, “That’s right! Very soon Geralt is going to be back in action battling not only man and monsters, but also mer-people.”
The animated film is scheduled to release on February 11, 2025 on Netflix.
The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep plot
It’s not only Nilfgaard’s quest for dominance that is happening in the Continent. In The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, the viewers will take a ride deeper into the Continent. The animated version is based on a short story of The Witcher series that has never been made before.
In the animated film, Geralt of Rivia will find himself at the centuries-old conflict between humans and merpeople. As the mutated monster hunter gets hired to investigate the seaside killings, Geralt calls upon his old allies and new friends to sort the dispute between them before it goes out of hand and becomes an all-out war.
The storyline will also explore Essi Daven’s character, a bard who falls for the monster-hunter, Geralt. However, he cannot reciprocate her feelings in the way she wanted. Now, only time will tell how the animated flick closely follow the short story.
Who are starring in The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep
The cast of the animated film will feature a quirky mix of the old actors from the live-action series and a few new stars. Doug Cockle after voicing the grumpy White Wolf in the video game series, Witcher 3, is returning as Geralt of Rivia.
He is very excited to reprise his role as a voice artist of Geralt once again. In an interview with Netflix, Cockle shared via Entertainment Weekly,
I am super excited to announce my return to the world of The Witcher voicing Geralt of Rivia once again. I’m thrilled to be able to share this next chapter of the White Wolf’s journey with fans of the Witcher universe. Mire taedh aen stráede!
On the other hand, Anya Chalotra is returning as Yennefer of Vengerberg, who already played the character in the live-action series, and she is joined by Joey Batey who is again voicing his own character Jaskier. However, in this known mix, a newcomer is making an entrance, and that is Christina Wren. Wren is going to voice Essi Daven.
The confirmed star cast list consists:
The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep Characters | Actors who are voicing them |
Geralt of Rivia | Doug Cockle |
Yennefer of Vengerberg | Anya Chalotra |
Jaskier | Joey Batey |
Christina Wren | Essi Daven |
However, the Henry Cavill fans will definitely miss that scruffy voice and attitude of the actor since he has left the universe after season 3 of the live-action series.
How The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep fits into the timeline of the story
To clear out any confusion of the viewers, Netflix announced during the Geeked Week time where the animated flick sits in the timeline. As per the announcement, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep will be set in between episodes 5 and 6 of The Witcher season 1 live-action series.
The Witcher universe somewhat mimics the fractured timeline following Sapkowski’s style as he didn’t publish the series of books in a particular order. Now, it’s time to brush up on our memories, so rewatching season 1 is a must.
Written by Mike Ostrowski and Rae Benjamin (The Witcher writers) and produced by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, Sapkowski plays a creative consultant. However, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf‘s storyboard artist, Kang Hei Chul, is going to take up the director’s chair for this animated film.
