‘The Originals’ Cast: What Is the Mikaelson Family Doing in 2024?

People have harbored a deep fascination for werewolves, vampires, witches, and ghosts for ages. While ample series and movies have been made on the supernatural theme, The Originals has managed to satisfy fans’ craving in a way like no other.

A spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, the CW show features the origin and present of the first vampires ever created: the Mikaelson family—Mikael, Finn, Elijah, Kol, Rebekah, and their half-brother and hybrid, Niklaus. While the show features all of the Mikaelson family at different times, it primarily deals with Elijah, Niklaus, and Rebekah.

The show aired from 2013 to 2018, and its five seasons were extremely gripping, exploring the emotional bonds that kept the Mikaelsons together and their battles against various supernatural threats amid constant power struggles. The Originals‘ fan-favorite cast has since embarked on diverse projects, from movies to television series.

So while in 2024, the Mikaelsons and their friends may no longer be gracing our screens in New Orleans, here is a look at what the actors who brought these brilliant characters to life are doing. Whether it’s stepping into new roles, starting families, or expanding their careers beyond acting, here’s a closer look:

Elijah Mikaelson aka Daniel Gillies

Daniel Gillies portrayed the noble Elijah Mikaelson in The Originals. First introduced in The Vampire Diaries, Elijah quickly became a fan-favorite for his chivalrous English gentleman-esque personality and being the absolute brute when needed.

While working in The Originals, Gillies also starred in the supernatural series Saving Hope as Dr. Joel Goran. He later went on to play the role of Mark Monroe in Virgin River, a romantic series by Netflix in 2019. In 2022, he was cast as Charlie Tate in The Newsreader, in the second season of the series.

In 2019, Gillied separated from his wife of five years, Rachel Leigh Cook. He has moved on and has been in a relationship with cellist Julia Misaki since 2021.

Niklaus Mikaelson aka Joseph Morgan

Joseph Morgan has had a remarkable career but the English actor is known best for playing Niklaus ‘Klaus’ Mikaelson in The Originals. Known for being the most feared Original and an absolute brute, Klaus ends up dead in the series along with his brother Elijah by the end.

After completing the CW series, Morgan went on to star in the sci-fi Peacock drama Brave New World. He later was cast in the fourth season of Titans, and also reprised his role of Klaus in Legacies (a spin-off of The Originals) in 2022.

In February 2024, the actor joined the cast of Halo season 2, as an operative of the secretive Office of Naval Intelligence of the United Nations Space Command. He has been married to The Vampire Diaries‘ co-star Persia White since 2014 and is a stepfather to her daughter.

Rebekah Mikaelson aka Claire Holt

Born and raised in Brisbane, Australia, Claire Holt made her acting debut in 2005, but it was her roles in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals that earned her worldwide acclaim. While continuing in the series she starred in the NBC series Aquarius and the romantic comedy film The Divorce Party.

In 2017 she starred in ABC’s thriller Doomsday and as Kate in the survival film 47 Meters Down. The actress went on to star in Untitled Horror Movie in 2021 and reprised her role in Legacies as Rebekah Mikaelson, reappearing one last time in 2022.

Apart from her acting career, Holt has turned to blogging by opening her website, sharing with fans her thoughts on motherhood, makeup, and life updates. Since 2018, she has been married to real estate executive Andrew Joblon and has three kids with him, two sons and a daughter.

Hayley Marshall aka Phoebe Tonkin

Hayley Marshall caught the eyes of fans since she first appeared in the CW supernatural series The Vampire Diaries and later in The Originals. The mother of Klaus Mikaelson’s only child, Hope, later becomes a hybrid as well. Also the romantic interest of Elijah Mikaelson, Marshall is one of the lead characters of the series.

While her run ended in season 5, episode 6, Phoebe Tonkin’s career in America received a huge boost. In 2017 she joined the short drama Safe Harbour and won an International Emmy Award for Best TV Movie or Miniseries. Later she made several appearances in series and moves like Bloom, Night Shift, and most recently in Netflix’s 2024 coming-of-age series Boy Swallows Universe as a drug-addicted mother.

Now an established actress, she has also made a name for herself as a fashion icon. From Chanel and Tiffany & Co., Tonkin has collaborated with several high-end fashion brands, garnering significant media and fan attention as a result.

Marcel Gerard aka Charles Michael Davis

Born in Ohio, Charles Michael Davis started his career in showbiz as a print model and in commercials for brands like Nike. But it was his casting as Marcel Gerard in The Originals that helped propel him to success. He later went on to star in the comedy series Younger and became the main cast in its fifth season.

In 2020, Davis was cast in NCIS: New Orleans as the Special Agent Quentin Carter. He later reprised his role of Marcel Gerard for a few appearances in The Originals spin-off Legacies. Lately, he seems to be enjoying life and exploring other fields of interest, like directing.

Davina Claire aka Danielle Campbell

Davina Claire might not be an Original or a werewolf, but her incredible skills as a witch proved her vital enough to be labeled as one of the draws of The Originals. Starring as the 16-year-old witch with mystifying powers, Danielle Campbell was sensational in the role and went on to make appearances several times in the series.

The Disney star has since appeared in movies like 16 South, Race to Redemption, and F the Prom. Campbell has also held recurring roles in series like Famous in Love, and Tell Me a Story and even starred in the Broadway production of Trouble in Mind. She has recently been cast in Netflix’s 8-episode series The Waterfront.

Did any of The Originals cast date each other?

With the cast spending so much time together on set, it comes as no surprise that there are some actors who ended up falling for their co-stars. While Joseph Morgan is famous for his role as Klaus in The Originals, his first appearance as the hybrid was in The Vampire Diaries, where he also coincidentally met his now-wife, Persia White.

Similarly, Daniell Campbell, after dating people like One Direction sensation Louis Tomlinson, found love with The Originals co-star Colin Woodell. After dating for five years, the couple got engaged in 2023, shocking many with their announcement (see Instagram). The Vampire Diaries regular, Candice King who starred as Caroline, fell for The Originals star Steven Krueger. The two have been in a relationship for quite some while now, but have been keeping their relationship under wraps.

Meanwhile, on-again, off-again couple Phoebe Tonkin and Paul Wesley might have met on the set of The Vampire Diaries but made an appearance together in The Originals. After several patch-ups and splits, they finally ended things in 2017 but remain good friends even now.
