Netflix and WIT Studio have officially announced The One Piece, a ground-up remake of Eiichiro Oda’s legendary manga series. Starting with the foundational East Blue Saga, this collaboration aims to reimagine the journey of Monkey D. Luffy that began in 1999 with new cutting-edge technology.
For now, there is no release timeline in view. Neither WIT nor Netflix has zeroed in on any date or month so far. However, to console eager fans, the official X account @onepiecenetflix dropped a post, stating, “A new anime from WIT STUDIO. LET’S RUN IT BACK.” Seemingly, this is the studio’s attempt to pacify us with something, as there’s no release date in sight.
Unlike the ongoing weekly series produced by Toei Animation, which has surpassed 1,100 episodes, The One Piece promises a more streamlined, high-fidelity experience designed to entice a new generation of viewers.

The One Piece by WIT Studio & Netflix Release Timeline Window
While fans are eager to set sail, Netflix and WIT Studio have been strategically cautious about pinning down an exact calendar date. As of April 12, 2026, the project is still in production. And no release date or window has been announced yet. The last update of the project was shared in December 2023 regarding the studio and Netflix joining hands to remake Eiichiro Oda’s legacy anime.
On April 7, the X account of Netflix Japan revealed its new image board via a X post. Along with that, the official X account of Netflix uploaded a short teaser video that consisted of the new images.

This timeline definitely reflects a quality over speed philosophy. By taking their time, WIT Studio aims to recreate Oda’s magic with advanced animation graphics. This will give the seiyu’s like Mayumi Tanaka (Luffy), Akemi Okamura (Nami), Kazuya Nakai (Zoro), among others, another chance in recreating the East Blue Saga in their mature baritones.
For Netflix, this is a long-term play to solidify One Piece as a cornerstone of their animation library, standing alongside their successful live-action adaptation. The live-action series dropped its Season 2 in March 2026. This further shows how much the streaming giant is invested in this particular anime franchise and its variations.
What’s The One Piece by WIT Studio about?
Nico Robin in One Piece: Elbaf Arc. [Credit: Toei Animation]At its core, The One Piece is a faithful re-adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga. It follows the story of Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy who gains the properties of rubber after accidentally eating a Devil Fruit. Inspired by his idol, Red-Haired Shanks, Luffy sets out to sea to find the titular “One Piece” treasure and become the Pirate King.
However, the “what” of this project goes deeper than just the plot. For a new fan in 2024, looking at a series with over 1,000 episodes is intimidating. The One Piece seeks to “reset” the clock. It provides a version of the story that is visually consistent with modern 4K standards and widescreen (16:9) aspect ratios, as opposed to the early episodes of the original 1999 anime, which were produced in 4:3 standard definition.
The One Piece Cast and Character Details

While the voice cast for the Japanese version is widely expected to feature the original “Straw Hat” actors such as Mayumi Tanaka as Luffy and Kazuya Nakai as Zoro, the creative leadership behind the scenes is where the real transformation is happening.
Furthermore, WIT Studio rejected Luffy’s VA, Mayumi Tanaka’s one request. The popular Japanese seiyu is 71 as of 2026 and wants to retire due to her health issues. However, the studio turned her request down. To watch Luffy without Tanaka’s youthful voice is as bizarre an idea for fans as it can get. Nonetheless, the legendary voice artist is still very much a part of The One Piece project.
Which Manga Arcs Will Be Covered in The One Piece?

This is the introductory “super-saga” of the series, where Luffy gathers his core crew and makes a name for himself in the weakest of the four seas before heading to the Grand Line.
The remake will specifically cover Luffy’s childhood, his encounter with Shanks, and his first meeting with Koby and Alvida. It will also include Orange Town Arc, where we met Nami and fought against Buggy the Clown.
Then it will continue to the Syrup Village Arc, where we meet Usopp, followed by the Baratie Arc to recruit Sanji, and where our Zoro ate dust against the might Dracule Mihawk. Plus, Arlong Park Arc and the Loguetown Arc, where Luffy is nearly executed at the same spot as the previous Pirate King, Gold Roger.
In The One Piece, we can expect these stories to be tight and impactful. For instance, the fight against Arlong, which took a dozen episodes in the original, could be delivered in a few high-octane, movie-quality episodes. Who knows? Only time will tell.
